Over the last few years, Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) have been slowly changing the way people manage their personal information and the way they communicate.

When Microsoft originally launched the Windows CE operating system in 1996 with the Handheld PC, people were not quite sure what to make of these "mini-computers," and questioned whether they would actually replace notebooks and paper organizers. Over the last few years, they have slowly made their way through the back doors of companies as people begin to realize the potential, convenience, and power of having ultraportable computing devices in their pocket, regardless of the strange looks from co-workers. Combined with its capability to communicate on a network with both other devices and the Internet, the mobile device is now recognized as a revolutionary technology.

With the recent advent of higher-speed wireless connections, the true power of the Pocket PC platform can finally be exploited by developers and the users of their applications. In order to write software for the Pocket PC 2002 platform, you need to have installed Embedded Visual C++ version 3.0, along with the Pocket PC 2002 Platform SDK. The toolkit and SDK are currently available for free download from microsoft/mobile/developer/downloads.

If you're crazy about writing useful apps for sexy little devices like the PocketPC Phone Edition and need a good networking reference, wired or wireless, you must buy this book. It is anchored by a strong index and a sensible and logical chapter structure. My favorite feature is the just-inside-the-cover FAQ (front and back) with page numbers where the question is answered.
Unlike many technical books, PocketPC Network Programming will neither insult your intelligence nor assume that you know everything. Basic concepts (like cookies, headers, SMS, etc) are briefly, thoroughly, and elegantly described.
Most importantly, Steve Makofsky's code samples are crisp, well-documented, and his explanations are easy to follow--even for a confirmed eVB/eC# junkie like me. In particular, there's an excellent chapter on the Pocket Outlook Object Model and MAPI that explains how to create Pocket Outlook plugins, and more.
I recommend this book without reservations and would rank it up there with books from the likes of Stephen Walther, Charles Petzold, and Don Box.

Awsome networking reference

This is the de facto networking reference that the Pocket PC community has been waiting for. It introduces the network model to new programmers as well as handling the advanced topics that veteran programmers would be looking for. The book also covers the newer technologies that are found in the Phone Edition of the PPC platform which I've been looking for in a text for months. The included source code has also been invaluable as the cited examples are great to learn by and can be used to jump start projects.
A definite "must have" for any Pocket PC programmer that wants to access networks in their applications!

Any developer can benefit from this useful book. Combining the best aspects of a users' guide and a reference manual, the book has any information a Pocket PC programmer would need, in a format that's easy to use and readable. The index, FAQs and code samples make it easy to find just the information you're looking for, with descriptions providing more context and background. And I particularly enjoyed the funny and appropriate quotes from movies or TV programs at the beginning of each section.

About the Author
Dr. Daniel W. Lewis' efforts led to the creation of Santa Clara University’s Computer Engineering department in 1988, providing its leadership for the first 18 years. During his tenure, Lewis established unique co-op and study abroad options that fit within the normal undergraduate four-year plan, the first graduate-level academic certificate programs for working professionals, a new interdisciplinary major in Web Design and Engineering, and a interdisciplinary minor in Information Technology and Society. Since 2004, Lewis has focused on K-12 outreach in engineering and computing, raising more than $1.7M from NSF and private sources, and providing professional development for more than 200 K-12 teachers and summer camps for more than 2,000 K-12 students.

Prior to joining the University in 1975, Lewis worked for six years at General Electric’s Aerospace Division where he designed a fault-tolerant clocking system for one of the first triple-redundant automatic landing systems for commercial aircraft. He has consulted for a number of Bay Area companies, including the Singer-Link Company, where his design of new algorithms and a corresponding modular array of VLSI circuits became the basis of a new product line of real-time computer graphics systems.

Great for learning the basics of embedded programming

It's a great book for exactly what its title says: embedded software fundamentals. The author does a great job explaining the fundamentals of embedded programming. He explains this using an ARM processor so keep that in mind. ARM is pretty much an industry standard though, so this is a good example processor to use. Obviously to program the ARM board, you're still going to need the ARM-Cortex Mx User's manual, the manufacturer's reference manual, etc...you're still going to need to use all the data sheets. This book teaches you the basics. You then go into these ARM/manufacturer manuals and put what you learned from both into programming the board and peripherals.

In a nutshell, this book is a great supplement to teach you the general concepts of embedded programming. You'll also need the actual chip's user's manual to program the chip.

It's a book for those who are the new in MCU programming and want to start with Cortex. Most of the chapters are useful at the beginning period for those people. This book may be interesting for the start time in practice of ARM MCU for those, who are familiar with MCU. The advanced MCU users will found some interesting moments in chapters 5, 6 (Programming in Assembly) and in chapter 12 (Shared Memory).For experienced "not ARM MCUs users" this book is a good handbook.
