Review
"Burton's latest is a chilling, suspenseful read with a calculating villain at the center of a well-crafted, intricate plot. Alex and Leah's intensity and pairing is a highlight. With sharp, crips dialogue and heightened tension, this story will have readers guessing until the very end." RT Book Reviews

Another great read by Mary Burton
By Diane Saul
Four years ago Leah Carson was stalked and almost killed by her cop husband. He escaped and was supposedly killed in a car crash shortly after. The body was burned beyond recognition and identification was made from a ring and a wallet found at the scene. Now she has moved back to Nashville after finishing vet school. Unexplained things start happening to Leah, missing keys, flat tire, anonymous flowers, credit issues and movers show up supposedly on her orders to pack up all her belongings. Leah doesn't know where to turn, she thinks maybe her ex isn't dead. While this is happening Deidre Jones, a cop in Nashville, has made a point of friending Leah with her own agenda. Deidre is under investigation and a TBI agent Alex Morgan has found a way to insert himself into Leah's life to see if he can get info on Deidre. He knows that Leah has a secret, he sees her scars and recognizes them as defensive scars. He is also attracted to her. When Deidre turns up murdered, stabbed the same number of times as Leah, Alex thinks the cases are connected but can't figure out how. Is Leah's husband alive and responsible for the murder or is there someone else in the picture. Can Alex figure it out in time? Plenty of suspense with an ending I didn't quite figure out. Another great read by Mary Burton.

Good Reading

Far more suspense than romance, I’ll Never Let You Go had a heart-stopping plot.
The heroine, Leah, is incredibly strong. She (barely) got away from her abusive husband once and is determined to never be a victim again. She has a lot of deep-seated fears and a little bit of OCD behavior (like checking and re-checking her locks), but who could blame her. She manages to lead a pretty normal life despite it all. I really loved how she recognized her weaknesses but took steps to overcome them. Leah was a woman to be admired.
Alex is part of the internal affairs department at the police department and not well-loved by his fellow officers (except his family, who are all involved in law enforcement in some manner). Still, he has strong values and convictions and manages to not let it really affect him. And when he has to investigate Leah’s best friend, he uses Leah to get information, not realizing that eventually he’d find himself legitimately attracted to her. I got a kick out of Alex and his interactions with his family. He’s an awesome guy, but almost a little too perfect. I don’t think he honestly had any flaws. He was handsome, smart, honorable … but he was also likely exactly what Leah needed. Her former husband certainly had his share, so perhaps Alex in all his perfection was the only thing that would have worked for her.
The story is packed with twists and turns. While I wouldn’t say it was a non-stop, adrenaline pumping suspense, it certainly kept me thinking and wondering. All the hard evidence from the past points to Leah’s husband being dead, but everything happening now screams that he’s alive. I knew there had to be a twist somewhere, and there is, but you won’t find out until the very end!
The main reason I chose the rating I did here, though, was because the book is marketed as romantic suspense and it really isn’t. The romance is nearly nil. Calling the heat “spicy” is almost a misnomer—as there is one very briefly described (no sexy details) sex scene and honestly, the first three-quarters of the book, it’s really as if Leah and Alex are barely friends. Yes, there is a HEA for them, but it’s a pretty quick turn of events. Believable, I suppose, but I really missed seeing the relationship truly develop over the course of the entire book.
So, don’t go into this expecting romance like I did. You’ll likely be disappointed. Go into this for a mystery instead and then you’ll get the most enjoyment from the story. Mary Burton is a very good writer, with a clever mind and clear description. The next time I pick up a book of hers to read, though, I’ll know what to expect.

I Wish I Had Let This One Go Without Purchasing It

I have enjoyed past novels written by Mary Burton, but I am not enjoying her 'Morgans of Nashville' series at all. I am afraid she is no longer an auto-buy for me.
Burton's latest in the Nashville series 'I'll Never Let You Go' suffered from the same weak character development and unrealistic storyline as the previous books. I guess its just me, since other reviewers loved this book, but the Morgans are some of the most unlikeable characters I have ever been introduced to! 'I'll Never Let You Go' showcases TBI agent Alex Morgan, a cold, unfeeling, robotic hero and veterinarian Leah Carson, a physically and emotionally scarred survivor of domestic abuse.
These books are listed as romantic suspense, but there is really no build up to or development of the romance. Alex is investigating a friend of Leah's and that is pretty much the basis of their relationship! Both the hero and heroine are very closed off people. After several strange stalking episodes suddenly Alex and Leah have sex, and the author wants readers to accept that they have romantic feelings for each other. Didn't work for me at all! And for someone who was nearly killed, stabbed 23 times by her estranged husband several years ago, Leah is shown compulsively locking and rechecking her locks, but doesn't hesitate to go out alone to walk her dog, walk herself to her car at night, or go running in the woods without a companion to keep pace with her! I hate to say it, but she falls into the 'too-stupid-to-live' category. The author attempted to throw suspicion on Leah's dead husband, crafting a reveal with an over-the-top, over contrived, over-kill by her perpetrator.
If readers liked the previous books in the Nashville series and the Morgan clan, then you will like this book. Since I did not 'I'll Never Let You Go' is a definite miss for me.
