Great Resource!

Creative Teaching Methods is a great resource book for all teachers. I found mespecially good ideas for older elementary and high school students. It is arranged for easy use and gives down-to-earth instructions and ideas. It is a must for all religious-oriented institutions and teachers.

Great book to help teachers to think creatively in differentiating instruction.

This book was a great work to help ministers and teachers alike to start thinking of the benefits of creativity in teaching and delivery. While the chapters containing specific ways to foster creativity through means of drama, stories, and other method are helpful and provide a number of good ideas to get teachers started, the true gold od this book is found in the opening chapters. LeFever's explanation of the need for creativity and the steps necessary to create new ideas are fantastic and worth the price of the book by themselves. Rather than viewing this book merely as a handbook or guide of methods, as it is often treated in seminaries and teaching programs, this books is best taken as a challenge to differentiate educational methods with a number of examples to help the teacher get started. Enjoy!

Wim van Drongelen studied Biophysics at the University Leiden, The Netherlands. After a period in the Laboratoire d'Electrophysiologie, Université Claude Bernard, Lyon, France, he received the Doctoral degree cum laude. In 1980 he received the Ph.D. degree.
He worked for the Netherlands Organization for the Advancement of Pure Research (ZWO) in the Department of Animal Physiology, Wageningen, The Netherlands. He lectured and founded a Medical Technology Department at the HBO Institute Twente, The Netherlands. In 1986 he joined the Benelux office of Nicolet Biomedical as an Application Specialist and in 1993 he relocated to Madison, WI, USA where he was involved in research and development of equipment for clinical neurophysiology and neuromonitoring.
In 2001 he joined the Epilepsy Center at The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA. Currently he is Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology, and Computational Neuroscience. In addition to his faculty position he serves as Technical and Research Director of the Pediatric Epilepsy Center and he is Senior Fellow with the Computation Institute. Since 2003 he teaches applied mathematics courses for the Committee on Computational Neuroscience. His ongoing research interests include the application of signal processing and modeling techniques to help resolve problems in neurophysiology and neuropathology.

Fills an important niche

This book is clearly not intended for the beginner. It is intended for graduate students or undergraduates with a good working knowledge of at least calculus although many people benefit from previous exposure to differential equations in reading this book. There are many books out there in the math and physics literature that cover many of these topics but are entirely incomprehensible to the average neuroscientist. This book is the only book on the market that bridges the knowledge gap between students who already possess an introductory quantitative background and those capable of reading modern quantitative literature from fields such as engineering and signal processing. It is also the only book for neuroscientists that introduces these more advanced concepts from the perspective of a neuroscience (i.e. using EEG recordings, etc. to illustrate the methodology). Finally, the Matlab code presented in the book can in many instances be used directly in one's own research making this book a very practical investment.

Useful.

This book contains useful exercises and demonstrations of MATLAB code that are worth looking at. Overall, I think it covers the major topics and does a decent job fulfilling that purpose.

Having said that, however, the language of the book is not reader-friendly. It's not to say that we aren't dealing with advanced material here, because it wasn't intended for the beginner. Don't expect that you'll just be able to pick up the text and read it without any prior knowledge.

I would have given this book an additional star, however, there are some errors of calculation in the beginning exercises. If you are the advanced reader, you'll pick up on these--someone other than myself actually picked up on these, so don't just take the calculation and their end result to be the answer--as always, be cautious when you read.

Outstanding if you're up on your ODEs

I'm an EE who writes domain specific languages for robotics, and also works in medical devices. I've worked in Neuro a LOT but am not a Neurologist. From an Engineering viewpoint, signal processing is about analyzing, transforming and designing time and/or frequency based signals. The two major "divisions" of the field include analog and digital. The major "tools" are advanced statistics (read: sampling), transforms and filters.

This book attempts to put mostly DSP in biological frames with EEG type examples for the harmonics. If you're either a neuro person who is up on ordinary differential equations (a little pdes don't hurt), or you've taken EE courses in SP, you will LOVE this text. In an ironic sense, biological neural and synaptic nets are "sortof" analog, whereas SP is now heavily digital. Over a decade ago some of Neurology started to analyze spiking and other neuronal systems via dynamical systems models-- meaning differential equations, and if you're a part of that group, this book will be wonderful for you.

If you are very rusty on calculus, haven't done any linear algebra, and no ODEs/PDEs, and especially if you're an autodidact, I'd pick up one of the inexpensive Dover intros to Fourier transforms, odes and pdes before tackling this. You can get some of these for as little as $3 US. BTW, this book also has a number of amazing new and used "deals" and I've seen it new for as low as $35 US, so SHOP it, especially via Amazon third parties and at Abe Books.

I worked at GE in MRI and NMR for a while and took a number of neural imaging physics classes. In addition to the signal processing features of neural rhythms and spikes themselves, many measurement and research technologies are also SP based, eg. ASP- RF in the case of MRI. Matlab or its GNU free version are musts for those studies, and this fine text. Again, if you haven't worked with Matlab, you won't learn it with this text, and will get lost quickly. There are a number of inexpensive Matlab books, one specifically for neuro (MATLAB for Neuroscientists, Second Edition: An Introduction to Scientific Computing in MATLAB) if you find it used, and you'll need to brush up on the user interface. There are many online tutorials on it, and numerous books on the GNU version here on Amazon also.

If you can't find a good Matlab prep text, this is the best one I've read, used and found that is up to date and reasonably priced: Matlab, Third Edition: A Practical Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving. You don't really need the "neuro" version if you get Dr. Stormy's fine text.

The Matlab code in this text is at about 95% usable right out of the book. That is astonishing for a text, and some of the code runs the first time! Unheard of in most of the texts you get today that are rushed to press. Highly recommended with the right background or pre-reading/ supplementary prep.

Professor David Foskett MBE CMA FIH is a best-selling author. He is Head of School at the London School of Hospitality and Tourism at Thames Valley University. He was awarded Catering Educator of the Year 2004 and, in 2008, received France's Agricultural Order of Merit for his work promoting French food and food education. Neil Rippington is Dean of the College of Food at University College Birmingham. He has received awards for his part in developing the City & Guilds Diplomas in Professional Cookery, and is a consultant and principal examiner for the Hospitality Diploma for two major awarding bodies. Patricia Paskins MHCIMA is a hospitality lecturer and Work-Based Learning Fellow at the London School of Hospitality and Tourism at Thames Valley University.

About the Author
Chuck Knox developed a love of history, as a child, from his mother when she would relate stories of a rebel great grandmother and a great grandfather who served in the Union Army. He is a retired Senior Purchasing Officer from the University of Illinois and since his retirement he has pursued his lifelong passion of preserving stories of everyday heroes that saved this country. He has known veterans from the Spanish-American War, World War I and II, Korea and Viet Nam. The Muted Trumpet's Call is the fourth in a series of books on veterans from the Heartland. He was selected Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Department of Illinois, Veterans of Foreign Wars for his work for veterans. He received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Naval Reserve as a Radioman 2 serving 8 years. During this time he served on several WWII destroyers and met many WWII veterans. This book is dedicated to the young Americans of the 1940's. These young people were thrust into situations that they or none of us could imagine. How they handled themselves and saved our country are stories worthy of legend and should not be forgotten. As they arrive at their final destination, I am sure they will hear the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" May God bless them and may God save the Republic" We should not be sad that such men are dead but rather be thankful that such men lived. alot like karakuri

this book is very similiar to the karakuri book the begining is just information on paper animation and the begining is just mechnisms for you to use to create your own models and then it has some full animation kits in it.
the first 9 models in the paper models that move book are just teaching you difrent mechnisms and how they create movment and the book gives you ideas of how to use these movments to create your own model but i didnt do any of those the last 6 are compleat animation kits and i just finished the third one.the first one is a pretty simple model and not very hard its called
happy birthday and its just a stork carrying a baby that flaps its wings and moves back and forth.

the seconed model is called ducks on the pond its a very nice looking model it just is a simple turntable that moves a set of ducks around in a circle and thrugh a little lilly turnel.

the third model is the one that is the center picture on the cover its called pyrimid lifter this model has alot of little tube pieces and other little pieces that all join together to create the movment it takes a bit of time to do but like with all paper animation kits as long as you are prececise in your cutting of the pieces(the pieces are not pop out and all need to be cut out with scisors and you need an exacto knife to cut out the openings in some pieces)and glue everything accuratly then the movment will be accurate.

just finished all the paper models the weight of buracay model is a bit tricky in some parts expecialy when glueing the cams to the inside wheels.also on mine the center tube that conects the handle to the movment on the inside got all twisted and ripped apart so the handle dosnt work but i can turn the inner wheel manualy and i do get the movment.

the last two models use a sand mechanism that is ment to run off of fine sand going thru a funnel and then creating the movment.the pianist wasnt very hard to make the folds on the piano are a bit hard to see but otherwise it is fairly simple

the last model is the gymnist it didnt seem to be hard but i cant get the movment when i turn the wheel that the sand should fall in and turn so im not sure what i did wrong on that one but mine dosnt work but the back ground scene looks nice sitting on the shelf with my other paper models.

Great models and a little challenge

Walter Ruffler's models ran the gamut in this book; some are fairly easy to assemble while others can be quite fiddly, especially if you are new to automata or papercraft. I used some of these successfully with middle school aged students (11-14) but the models operated by gravity-fed sand proved too much of a challenge for them. Ruffler's finished models are charming, as always; just be prepared for the detail work involved in getting the mechanisms aligned and operating smoothly.
