When we were first approached by Dr. Lucky to write this book we were very enthusiastic about the prospect, since we had contemplated a similar project for quite some time. The difficulty lay in how best to digest the vast amount of data on optical propagation, reduce it to a book of manageable size, and simultaneously form the transition from the physics of propagation to the engineering of optical channels. This is the intent of Optical Channels. In accomplishing our goal it was necessary to condense the material on optical propagation and, in so doing, we have left a large amount to be handled via references. We have tried to make these decisions in a consistent manner so that the book will be uniform in its treatment of this topic. We identify four channels for consideration: the free-space channel, which: is characteristic of a tranquil atmosphere or a space-to-space link; the turbulent channel, which is characteristic of the atmospheric channel; the scatter channel in two forms, clouds and water; and the fiber optic channel. For each of these channels we have tried to reduce the applicable propagation theory to a level that can be used for engineering design. This has been done by example, but here again decisions had to be made on which examples to present. We have not tried to present any material on optical components and consequently other references on engineering would be necessary to supplement this book.

This book doesn't mention every Japanese architecture that one would normally associate. It gives an extremely unique and highly critical and selective account of modern Japanese architecture history particularly based on the powerful architecture of Antonin Raymond, Kazuo Shinohara and Arata Isozaki. From the author's tribute to these selected architects and architecture, the reader would be able to receive a new insight and broader yet more focus understanding of contemporary Japanesearchitecture. A Book Review

Touched by Fire is not an ordinary memoir. Refined by fire is probably more apt description of the Franklin Griffin's life journey. I read the book with curiosity and found it intriguing that one man's life filled with childhood deprivation, adversity, running against the law, finally serving his country in the marines, and witnessing Lee Harvey Oswald flee the scene of murder of a police officer in Dallas in 1964 an hour after President Kennedy was assassinated.

Nine years earlier, Franklin's father stood as witness to the killing of Alabama Attorney-General elect Albert Patterson by the Phenix mob. The following day, Johnnie Frank Griffin died. Unlike his father, Franklin did not come out with his testimony and kept quiet until he wrote Touched by Fire.

In writing the book, Franklin Griffin developed a close friendship with John Patterson, former Alabama governor, whose father's murder, Johnnie Frank Griffin stood as witness, and probably caused him his life. The historical ties that bind John Patterson and Franklin Griffin cannot be taken away from them.

The book is a story of Franklin Griffin, a man shaped by a tortuous past yet came out of it a survivor. Despite the difficult life growing in a dysfunctional family picking up cottons in Alabama in the 1940s, tortuous teen-age years, living in the shadow of the father he never knew, witnessing a historical event during the JFK assassination and keeping it a secret until he wrote this book, Griffin seeks meaning in everything that happened in the past seven decades of his life.

I met the author in Spring of 2012 and discovered a down-to earth Southern man with a pure heart. It looks to me that Touched by Fire is a turning point in Griffin's life. Now that his secrets are told in this book, he invites people to take a peek and perhaps encounter something familiar in their lives.

As gold is refined by fire, Franklin Griffin's life was touched by fire and he came out of it not scorched but purified like the precious metal.

"Touched By Fire" Touched Many memories.

I grew up in Phenix City, Alabama. My father was a part of the clean-up of Phenix City and was a life long friend of Governor Patterson.

Frank's book is about as accurate an account that I have read. The details are very interesting and accurate.

I met Frank by chance at Governor Patterson's book signing. At the time I purchased his book I did not know his exact connection because there were many players in this era and I grew up as a child knowing many of these men.

What was interesting to me about meeting Frank is that his father Johnnie Frank worked at the Elite Cafe prior to the shooting which happened to be next to the alley where the crime was committed. My father bought and ran the Elite Cafe a few years later in the early 60's when I was in the first grade.

It was at the Elite that I met and got to know several members of the RBA. The RBA was the Russell Betterment Association...a group formed by the honest and upright citizens of Phenix City, Alabama.Many of these men were humble (and smart )members of the RBA and never bragged or talked much of what they did.

My thanks to Frank Griffin for staying within the confines of the story and not choosing to sensationalize the story with hollywood stuff.

This is one great book about an extraordinary life experience

This is one great book about an extraordinary life experience. Frank Griffin goes into his experience from the tragic death of his father's death in a political assassination in Sin City, Phenix City, Alabama to floating on a troop carrier in the Gulf waiting to go ashore in the Cuba invasion to witnessing Lee Harvey Oswald leaving the scene of the Tippit murder in Dallas. I don't know many folks that have had those experiences, and it's well worth the read. Trust me!

Perdomo, a regular performer at Manhattan's Nuyorican Poets Cafe, is a scruffy organizer of his experience, throwing his poetics together tenement style. In the irresistible, high-spirited "Nigger-Reecan Blues," he insists, "Yo soy Boricua! Yo soy Africano! I ain't/ lyin'. Pero mi pelo is kinky y curly y mi skin no es negro pero it can pass . . ." Drawing on rap, jazz, Langston Hughes and the rhythms of the streets, this collection bristles with congas, timbales, police sirens and wino oracles, "singing a celebration of the island/ that some of us will never see." In poems that are scalding, toxic and dizzying, Perdomo reminds us that there is something wrong when feeling joy suggests mangled sanity: "I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I noticed I went to more funerals than parties this summer."

Perdomo (Young Tongues, First Civilizations, 1992) does not write a focused, collected poetry with practiced diction and tidy lines. His raucous craft owes more to rap than Whitman, forging works that sing, dance, and howl at the moon: "the 'hood/ the block/ the Ave./ the corner/ my boys." These are songs of the Harlem barrio, where (according to Langston Hughes) "a nickel costs a dime." Perdomo finds poetry in broken lines and blocked prose, in pieces of dialog and prayer. "Where I'm from, Puerto Rico stays on our minds when the fresh breeze of cafe con leche y pan con mantequilla comes through our half open windows." These sentiments give way to rage at times: "Every time I go downtown la madam blankita de Madison Avenue sees that I' standing next to her and she holds her purse a little tighter." As rough and sharp as the images often are, there is grace and tenderness as well. A good introduction to what's happening on the cutting edge. A treasure

Read it again and again -- always out loud -- and the extraordinary rhythms of Willie Perdomo's powerful poems will reach inside and grip your imagination. I never tire of picking this small volume up and enter once more New York City and the neighborhood of el barrio. The sounds of the streets, the cadence of young men and women as they boast and speak their affections, the sights of a Manhattan many visitors never see, all are integral to these poems. You'll be confronted with racism and poverty and violence. But, you'll equally face love and loyalty, family and hope. One of my students at the college in which I teach originally introduced Perdomo to me and I've been eager to share him with others ever since.

there's no way to be lukewarm about this book. It's a raw and beautiful lyric, and always so specific. Whenever I open "Where A Nickel Costs a Dime" , Willie is in the room. And he owns the room. until the moment I've finished the book again, and set it away.

GREAT BOOK

How could Amazon.com post such a scornful, personal review of a literary work? I live in the neighborhood where Willie Perdomo was raised and he is definitely not a disgrace to his people and his neighborhood. If I had a nickel for every time I heard a young and old Puerto Rican or African-American man or woman say they read his book and were affected, I would be rich. And now he is making contributions to children's literature with a new picture book called VISITING LANGSTON. People from all communities respect Willie and what he stands for. I buy this book regularly for people who live in our inner cities and need a witness. Please, the next time someone tries to post any kind of vicious attack on an author and his work, please refer to them to a therapist. Next thing you know he'll have a rabbit boiling in his kitchen. About the Author
Dominique Traverse Locke received her B.A. in English from Virginia Intermont College in 2006 where she served as editor of the college’s literary magazine, and received her M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte. While at Queens, Dominique studied with Cathy Smith Bowers, Pinckney Benedict, Alan Michael Parker, Robert Polito, Sally Keith, Claudia Rankine, and many other fine masters of their craft. She has been publishing work in regional literary magazines such as Barely South Review, The Sow’s Ear Poetry Review, and many other fine publications regularly since 2006. She resides in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia with her husband, the poet, David Alan Locke.

Stunning. Buy this book.

The Goodbye Child is astonishingly beautiful. There's a deceptive depth in the way their simple grace and honesty belie a raw precision that is at once profoundly unnerving and richly satisfying. With a wisdom and a maturity beyond her years, Dominique Traverse Locke lays bare the complexities of grief and blesses us with poems that reveal what it is to be wide awake and human amid the whirlwind of loss. What I admire most about this collection is also what I envy most about this poet's work--I wish that I had had even a fraction of the composure, the strength, and the pragmatism at the time of my own father's death that Dominique demonstrates in her contemplations in The Goodbye Child. Her ability to channel such a momentous loss into so many examples of fine poetry reveals not only the character of her soul, but the tremendous talent that resides in the heart of a true poet.

A moving exploration of grief that never becomes maudlin

There is an easy intimacy between poet and reader in this amazing collection of highly-accessible poems. Dominique takes me on a journey not only through her own loss and sorrow, but mine as well. And she remains my companion the entire walk. Reading "The Goodbye Child" was an incredibly beautiful, moving and cathartic adventure. The best part is, the experience deepens with each reading.

Something of refreshing change.

We all need a break from our normal routine reading material. In addition, one must always remember that no matter how interesting, or even absorbing, you find your own particular subject, there are often few people around who share that same enthusiasm for that topic. With this work, however, not only will any reader discover a fascinating diversion but any friend or family member who just happens to browse will also the book difficult to put down. Altogether, this really does provide something of a refreshing change.

This is not a product which concentrates on military blunders - and perhaps that is why I like it as much as I do. The subject matter within the book's 192 pages is broken down into eleven chapters each of which has a theme. The content is then exactly as stated in the title; "Strange but True Military Facts." Only from reading this book do I now fully understand why the quite excellent (and well led!) French Navy of the early 18th Century went into a sudden, almost instantaneous, decline which was nothing to do with Nelson who did not appear on the scene until much later.

In a well written and pleasantly crafted work, author Steve Crawford has succeeded in providing the reader with some truly fascinating ordinary and extraordinary military facts drawn from around the world. In the former category, we find some little known details about the world's oldest regiments, Napoleon's Imperial Guard, the Waffen SS, the cost of war, units which changed sides, projectiles which literally bounced off their targets instead of exploding and so forth. Those which fall under the latter, however, include the Danish major who ordered 500 bras for his female troops having been assured one size would fit all!, the German barbed wire which was made of such superior steel British wire cutters were useless, a lack of machetes during WW2 led to the US Army shipping thousands of surplus cavalry sabres to the South Pacific where they also proved to be ineffective, the war that was started by a stray dog, the army which was massacred because they were issued with biscuits instead of ammunition, the night bomber unit staffed by women only, the successful 16 year-old general and the WW1 U Boat sunk by a lorry (to mention just a few).

So much material for so many uses. I have already extracted a few favourites to add to my presentations. In fact, there is so much material here, one could so easily produce an entire light-hearted routine for a large audience. Whereas many of the facts would make them laugh, all would prove to be interesting.

Military enthusiasts and trivia buffs alike should enjoy this appealing and engaging guide to lesser known aspects of military history. British author Steve Crawford serves up over 500 short-and-sweet snippets that point up the ridiculous, strange, hilarious and downright crazy course warfare and military science has taken over the centuries.

Crawford's magical military history tour is divided into ten chapters entitled: 'The Art of War;' 'Battles, Numbers & Myths;' 'Tools of the Trade;' 'Elite Units;' 'Sky Warriors;' and so on. Each chapter then groups its factoids into rather loose categories. Paging through the 'Battlefield Blunders' chapter, for example, the reader will find information of 'Awful Armies, 'Incompetence,' 'Arrogance,' 'Underestimating the Enemy,' Too Many Equals Disaster,' 'Shortsightedness,' 'Too Old Too Fat,' etc.

Within the book's 192 pages, you'll find a smorgasbord of people, places, battles, weaponry and traditions including George Custer, redcoat uniforms, the F-22 Raptor, Napoleon, Husband Kimmel, food in Nelson's navy, grog, pyrrhic victories, heroic carrier pigeons, the Maginot Line, actor Richard Todd and many, many more. Though I've read a number of similarly-themed books, I was pleasantly surprised to find material new to me. The book's eye-catching visual design was also a plus.

In short, whatever your interest in military history, you'll probably find something appealing, entertaining or educational in STRANGE BUT TRUE MILITARY FACTS. It's a fun, fascinating read! Recommended.

I don't know when I picked up this book; in the dark ages, I suppose, back when I appreciated no book more than the Bible, and most books less than Louis L'Amour's _Sackett's Land_. But my book keeps yelling. "Hey ...!" it says. "I'm getting booklice up here! What are you reading that [book] for ...?"--Don't be too alarmed. All of O'Connor's books shout at readers that way.
Do you want to know something, though? The book has a pretty good reason to shout. Although it's been months since I finally read the collection, it hasn't quieted down. Moreover, I've grown appreciative of its company.
_Everything that Rises..._ was released after O'Connor's death. The hallmark story leads a parade of nine others, a veritable Mardi-Gras of intellectuals, petulants, vindictives, intolerants, and misconceivers, all down a path toward redemption, and thankfully, all with their shirts _on_ (except for that one guy with the tattoo, of course).
"Theology--ugh. Stop saying 'redemption'," some readers holler. Fortunately, O'Connor's theology is well-masked. In fact, I had to read her biography, look at her essays, and dig with a backhoe before I located any theology. But I found it. It was hiding there in plain sight, and once I saw it, I wondered that I had ever missed it. I had trouble locating her theology because O'Connor has a habit of flaying peoples' minds to reveal their darker side. And when you flay somebody's mind, well, to quote Lady Macbeth, "Who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?" Wait now--before you shout "Violence--ugh. Stop saying 'flay'," I need to tell you about her work.
O'Connor uses no words of mystery. That woman was club-thumping blunt. If you prefer stories that wash down pleasantly with watercress sandwiches and Darjeeling, then you'd better find your authors elsewhere. However, if you need something that brands your soul, and if you want the burn to last a long, long time, then read this collection.
O'Connor was passionate about two things in her life (well, three things actually, if you count large domesticated birds, but that's for another review): she loved her religion, and she loved the South. Her writing feels the effects of both. If the South provides the actual meat and potatoes of the story, then her Catholicism provides the salt, without which her stories truly might have been intolerable.

The South is not just a home for O'Connor. The south looms over her writing like a half-ton gorilla. But in a good way. Her region gives her work location, yes, but more importantly a sense of history, and of direction. She was fiercely unrepentant of her Southern heritage, at least in terms of its importance to her craft. Her collection of essays asserts that her Southern characters were grotesque because of their bad manners, yet to her, "bad manners are preferable to no manners at all."
Her work is equally tempered by her fierce Catholicism. In this age, where the church itself is virtually anathema, readers may be surprised that O'Connor attended Mass nearly every day of her life.
O'Connor is unrelenting in her work to provide situations of redemption and grace to broken people, and just in case the reader accidentally misses her point, she makes her characters very ugly and her redemptions--well, the only word to describe an O'Connor redemption is violent. O'Connor's God is not a bubbly, bearded Gnome who dances with pixies at lake's edge. _Her_ God whomps you on the head with a plank, because _someone_ hasn't been paying attention in Life 101. Pow! Redemption!
This concept may be difficult for Protestant readers, because we are often quick to identify grace as a gift from the God of mercy. We do well, therefore, to read this Catholic, who reminds us that grace is doled out by a God who is just. I guess I am telling you this because O'Connor's characters don't fall off cliff because it was determined that way--her characters fall because they are so fallen in the first place. They fall because of the inevitability of the character's nature. Humankind, in O'Connor's opinion, needs the occasional swift kick-in-the-pants to return them to a state of grace before God. Besides, is it not infinitely more pleasurable to watch the Coyote fall into the canyon when his hand-made Acme hang-glider collapses, than to endure the Care-Bears' fight against the bad, evil meanies, with the power of good?
Robert Fitzgerald assembled a 25-page introduction to this work. Despite its length, Fitzgerald's piece is probably the best biographical account on the market, and is certainly a useful look at the work it precedes. However, Fitzgerald, like too many writers of forewords, assumes too much knowledge of O'Connor's works on the part of the reader. He supposes we have heard of Taulkingham, or of Ruby Turpin, or Hazel Motes. We will not encounter these people in the present work, and the extra names and plot summaries only get in the way. Fitzgerald is dead, though, so I guess he won't be changing the introduction any time soon.
O'Connor's works are audacious and skilled. Occasionally, the reader can spot the thorns popping through the seams of some of the stories, due to her untimely death. It is evident to the reader that a few of these stories needed more rubbing and polishing. Yet, one by one, O'Connor's characters, depraved sons-of-guns one and all, limp through their metronome world until they are ultimately redeemed by their God. The intensity of reader's experience does not slacken until the last page.
I think this explains why _Everything that Rises Must Converge_ still shouts at me. And it will shout at you, to remind you that you are fallen, too--"Hey stupid! Put down your pen and read me again!"

O'Connor's Castigation of Bigots

What's the difference between a good and bad story? One will cause you to ponder its message long after you read it while the other will do nothing more than fill time. I did my share of pondering after reading each of Flannery's stories in this collection.
The stories, for the most part, take place in the rural South, where we hear the bleating of sheep, the snorting of pigs, and the mooing of cows. There is a narrow, but effective, variety of characters portrayed, from landowner to squatter, from black to white. The stories simmer with a religious flavor, and those who are religious seem to be either haughty and self-righteous or hopelessly naive. The religious bigots think their medicine is best and should be taken by everyone, while they themselves are really the ones "in need of a physician." The intellectuals weave throughout a story or two, and like some of the religious ones, they treat those around them with disdain and downright viciousness. The characters seldom remain unscathed, however. Divine justice usually swoops down and executes revenge upon them, either directly or indirectly. This revenge often tends toward the grotesque, and I often finished a story with my jaw hanging open. Now I can't wait to digest her complete collection.

"Floundering around in the thoughts of various unsavory characters."

For her first collection of stories ("A Good Man Is Hard to Find"), O'Connor gathered an assortment that had been previously published in magazines; the result was a fascinating, but unsystematic, potpourri of experimentation and originality. As she prepared the stories for "Everything That Rise Must Converge," however, she instead developed each selection under a thematic framework. (Only the last two stories, which were literally rushed to completion as she lay on her deathbed, seem to stand a bit apart.) The collection as a whole, even more than her previous fiction, emphasizes the absurdities and monstrosities of everyday life and the tension between the demands of the self and the mystery of the divine presence.

One of O'Connor's primary mentors for her approach to fiction was, surprisingly, James Joyce (and, specifically, "Dubliners"), and his influence is nowhere more obvious than in this book. In one story ("The Enduring Chill"), she pokes fun at Joyce's worldview in an exchange between an artist and a priest. She was surely alienated by Joyce's un-Catholic sentiments, but she acknowledged his influence in her essay "The Nature and Aim of Fiction": "The major difference between the novel as written in the eighteenth century and the novel as we usually find it today is the disappearance from it of the author. . . . By the time we get to James Joyce, the author is nowhere to be found in the book. The reader is on his own, floundering around in the thoughts of various unsavory characters."

"Unsavory characters" are, without doubt, O'Connor's specialty. Yet, is O'Connor effectively able to remove herself from her narratives? Do the stories in this collection succeed, as she intended, as a thematically linked sequence? And, aside from her stated literary goals, are these stories really that good?

Well, on the first two counts, the results are mixed. In spite of her intentions, O'Connor's presence crowds several of these stories. In "The Lame Shall Enter First" (my own favorite), a vague didacticism is obvious both in O'Connor's not-very-subtle manipulation of events and in the story's portrayals of the juvenile delinquent Rufus Johnson and his mentor Sheppard, a Good Samaritan wannabe. Yet O'Connor steps back just enough to allow the story itself to convey the depth of Sheppard's moral collapse. The less successful "Parker's Back" (one of the deathbed stories) concerns a "trailer trash" husband who, much to his wife's dismay, gets a tattoo of Jesus Christ inked on his back. It's one of O'Connor's more brilliant scenarios, but the psychological sermonizing of the omniscient narrator is a bit heavy-handed. The author is everywhere to be found in this story.

As for the collection's coherence: O'Connor moral vision is certainly more easily discernible in this book than in any of her previous works. But, like the "Lives of the Saints" she so cherished, O'Connor's hagiography of sinners, read back to back, occasionally suffers from a certain formulaic uniformity and predictability. Still, each story, enjoyed at random on its own, has the potential for being your "favorite O'Connor story"-and it's hard to find two readers who will agree on which stories in this collection are best. As a collection, then, it's a bit tame. Individually, however, the stories really are that good.

Throughout her career, O'Connor invented a gallery of memorable reprobates and unlikely prophets. Whether read separately or as a cycle, these nine stories add much to her unique legacy. And the collection will also help clear the air for readers (like me) who had always been enchanted by O'Connor's works of fiction but perplexed by critics who stress their theological and symbolic underpinnings.
