Good stories, good flies

Sylvester Nemes little book about fishing with soft hackles is a true gem. This is not a detailed tutorial on tying these (very simple) flies. Instead it's a look at one man's fishing adventures, centering around the use of the soft-hackled fly in its various forms. He rambles a bit here and there, and there's not much in the way of descriptions or tying instructions, but it's like sitting down with a favorite uncle who, for the umpteenth time, tells you about fishing the Test when he was Over There in the Big One. I get a real kick out of this book.

A 20th-Century Classic

The Soft-Hackled Fly is one of those wonderful, lyrical books that can be read in one extended sitting. Nemes has a warm, poetic writing style and a gift for weaving his personal fish story within the serious scholarship of his subject. He clearly takes the reader through the history of the sunk fly, expertly excerpts applicable passages from the canon of fly fishing literature, and in so doing has created his own literary classic that can stand beside Walton, Halford, Skues, and Sparse Gray Hackle on the angler's bookshelf.

Soft-Hackled Flies

I recently received the "The Soft-Hacked Fly-A Trout Fisherman's Guide" by Sylvester Nemes. I have read the book once and starting to reread. The section on the author's favorite flies is tremendous. I fished the Yellow Breeches in Pennsylvania and have used many of the patterns with great success.
