About the Author

Yvonne N. Bui (PhD, Special Education, Learning Disabilities, University of Kansas) is an Associate Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Learning and Instruction, School of Education at the University of San Francisco. She teaches master’s and doctoral level courses in Special Education, Research Methods, Master’s Thesis, Statistics, Grant Writing, and Dissertation Proposal Development. She serves as the chairperson and committee member for students’ theses and dissertations within the School of Education. She is the coeditor of Exceptional Children in Today’s Schools: What Teachers Need to Know. Her research interests include developing curriculum for students with disabilities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and international special education. Her personal interests include reading, writing, hiking, backpacking, camping, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Better for Quantitative Studies

As a history student, I find it unfortunate that this book (which is required for my thesis prep. class) is so heavily geared toward "quantitative" research. In other words, this book seems to provide a very clear formula for analyzing subjects pertaining to the realm of the sciences (in which numbers are the basis for research), wheras "qualitative" (non-numerical) research is kind of shoved to the side and alluded to only on occasion. Perhaps this is simply because a guide to more formulaic studies is naturally easier to write, but because this was still required reading, I constantly found myself asking, "How do the humanities fit into this again?"

Required Reading To Write A Thesis!

This book is filled with so much useful information on all of the ins and outs of writing a master's thesis that I cannot imagine how anyone could write without it. It answers all of the questions you did not even know you had about search engines and exactly how each chapter has to be structured and how to put all of the chapters together. I am just in the beginning stages of writing my thesis but I am certainly glad that I have this book as my companion on the journey.

An applicable glance into the past...

Rex Applegate learned from the best- W.E. Fairbairn and E.A. Sykes, men of the Shanghai Constabulary, who fought in over 200 gun battles during their tenure there... Fairbairn and Sykes were recalled to England, prior to World War II, to train those who would soon be in combat, around the world. Royal Commandos, SAS and SBS, MI5 and MI6, these men knew, already many times over, that in order to survive, when confronted by one's enemies, it was "Kill or Get Killed."

Prior to World War II, Rex Applegate joined the Army, by way of ROTC, and then went on to become a member of the Military Police. He was selected to learn the intricacies of hand-to-hand combat, by the OSS, and sent to England, to learn from the very best- Fairbairn and Sykes. There, Applegate learned how to properly use the blade, the knife, the handgun, explosives, his body, and most important his mind. He learned well, working with Fairbairn and Sykes, who had even their instructors deployed on missions worldwide, to return, and teach what worked, and did not work. Their methodologies evolved, and their efficiency is written in the annals of the clandestine services.

Applegate continued, when he returned to the United States, to build upon the knowledge and experiences of the British. His teaching encompassed the OSS, Marine Raiders, Army Rangers, and others, who worked in the shadows, without back-up or assistance, far behind enemy lines. Today's special operators stand upon the shoulders of men like Fairbairn, Sykes, and Applegate.

I heartily recommend this fine book, "Kill or Get Killed," as well as "Bullseyes Don't Shoot Back" with Michael D. Janich," "Combat Use Of The Double-Edged Fighting Knife," "The Close-combat Files Of Col. Rex Applegate," and the still germane DVD "Shooting for Keeps. Point Shooting for Close-Quarter Combat."

Additionally, I highly recommend W;E. Fairbairn's seminal works, :"Get Tough," "All-in Fighting," "Scientific Self-defense," "Defendu," and "Shooting To Live." These books have much still applicable to today's situations...

The Works of Applegate and Fairbairn are chock full of wisdom, knowledge, and proven techniques- gained by combat unto death, in wars of the shadows- from World War II, through the Cold War, and are used, even today...

Do I recommend this book, as well as those I've listed? Yes, without hesitation. The wise man or woman gleans what they will need, in order to survive, in this, an ever increasingly dangerous world... Applegate, Fairbairn, and Sykes would be teaching the same thing today, with variations upon the themes resting in their books...

GET IT FOR THE HISTORICAL VALUE

First, this is a 2007 reprint of that 1943 manual--even has a reprint of Rex Applegate's autograph from July 23, 1943. Chapter 9, "Jap Close Combat Tactics" was the best military intelligence assessment of the period and wasn't repeated in later editions.

POINT SHOOTING - Battle-Proven Methods Of Combat Handgunning - with an Introduction by Col. Rex Applegate

Compared to the current US Army combatives field manual, FM 3-25.150, Applegate's "Kill or Get Killed" is simple to learn (because it exploits motions already used in normal activities) and simple to retain. FM 3-25.150 emphasized controlled aggression to CONTROL enemy soldiers and irregular fighter suspects--and is heavy on non-lethal. "Kill or Get Killed" emphasized killing the enemy as rapidly as possible when the soldier had lost his weapons--using bare hands, or improvising weapons from a stick or heavy cord. Chapter 1 is "Unarmed Offense," and the 1942 US Army hand-to-hand combat manual labeled its unarmed fighting "defense." Different mind set.

I found the chapter on disarming quaint, even though the techniques work. The reason for my bemusement is that there are three reasons why someone loses control of their loaded firearm to an enemy: failure to shoot the enemy to death, letting the enemy get too close and failure to hold onto the gun until all ammunition in the gun has been expended. When a prisoner in war fails to cooperate--SHOOT! It isn't something a law enforcement officer can do--police are into control.

The chapters on combat shooting, outdoor and indoor ranges (6, 7 and 8) are worthwhile--though Applegate did update his method of combat shooting that E. A. Sykes and W. E. Fairbairn taught to British and American special forces. Their Shooting to Live With the One Hand Gun is the source of Applegate's firearm training in Kill or Get Killed. I corresponded with Rex Applegate two decades ago because I was integrating some of his work (as much as allowed by contract) with commercial security guard training for the force protecting an American Army logistics base in the Middle East during the 1990's.

Speaking of training, when my National Guard company deployed to the Middle East for Operation Iraqi Freedom II I advertised "knife fighting classes" based on the information in Chapter 5. My first words in that class were "I lied--this isn't knife fighting. You will not give your enemy a chance to win by fighting him--you will rapidly inflict lethal injuries on him before he realizes that you have a knife." In this reprint, Applegate's ideal fighting knife was Genuine British Commando Knife W/leg Sheath, but Applegate changed his ideal to Boker Knives AF11 Applegate/Fairbairn Fixed Blade Fighting Knife with Kydex Sheath.

I read a 1943 edition first during 1976 in the base library at Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Air Station, Hawaii, and I have been using the information since--including passing along some to Soldiers, Marines, and security personnel when appropriate.

I liked being able to trace the evolution of combatives--even when it was one man's viewpoint shifting over a period of 50 years.

Interesting.... great piece of work..... for it's time.

I would tend to give to give this work 3 stars based on content.

Although there are some things that are definitely still valid. Many of the riot formations shown in this book are still being taught today (at least they were in my police academy.) His demonstration on use of cover, etc. There are good things here.

However there is also a lot of outdated information as well. Most of the defensive tactics and shooting techniques are VERY outdated for example and haven't been taught for decades.

I do however give it four stars as it was a PHENOMENAL collection of information and techniques for it's time. Applegate did a GREAT job putting it all together in one source. I can't really find anyone else who had done an equally thorough job of putting it all together.
(Yes, I realize he was taught a lot of his stuff from other sources, Fairbiarn for example..... but I can't find an equally thorough piece of work from any of Applegate's predecessors.)

This really should be in the library of any self-defense enthusiast (by the way... it is fun.... I've caught several "experts" who cite this book, and it becomes apparent they didn't actually READ it. ha ha)

Informative Beginner's Guide

I'm becoming more aware of my energy field and how to take care of my psychic self, so to speak. This is exactly as described: a brief, fundamental introduction to balancing your chakras. It is 69 pages long and touches base on all 7 chakras and their function. Each chapter has a description of how you will feel balanced and how you will feel when imbalanced; balancing exercises for each individual chakra; questions to ask yourself what factors connect with chakra function/malfunction; and a brief list of physical and emotional symptoms connected to each. Also short guides at the end for crystal healing and aromatherapy.

I was recently assessed for free at a holistic expo and told I have a Solar Plexus blockage. I felt that I could trust the woman who told me, and I cross-referenced physical & emotional symptoms. The description fit my issues to a T. I got this book and was recently able to take a moment and do a crystal exercise; I felt much better for the rest of the day. A Beginner's Guide to the Chakras is a fantastic starter book for those who are new to awareness of energy, even those skeptics. It's informative and to the point, without confusing spiritual lingo. I'm learning quite a bit and I highly recommend it.

Excellent beginner's guide purchase

This is an excellent Beginner's guide to the Chakra's, easy to understand and gives a description of each chakra and the health affects of each one if blocked. I'm new to learning about the chakra's and I've found it extremely helpful. It's a small but very helpful starter book. Very happy with purchase, received very quickly, would order again thank you :) x

"It's the Mission, Not the Mandates" is a refreshing and inspiring read for anyone interested in improving public education in America. This book provides much needed hope for educators, administrators, policymakers, students, and parents that they can create passion and inspiration for learning in our public schools.

Dr. Fast is a passionate educator who expertly articulates the seemingly overwhelming challenges faced by America's educators and administrators. She defines with precision the changes that need to be made to motivate teachers to become exceptional educators and inspire students to do their best, masterfully identifying the "sweet spot" that has the potential to change the trajectory of students' lives and improve the health of our communities.

Dr. Fast demonstrates how America's public schools have lost their way and provides a clear path for improving public education, improving students' lives, and improving society. "It is not an exaggeration to say that those in the field of education are in the business of changing the world. Educators know that children are the key to improving society, that they are the future of our communities, and there is no work more important than investing in that future."

I especially appreciate that Dr. Fast provides an important and overdue voice for all stakeholders in public education, expressing the concerns of administrators, teachers, and students facing overwhelming pressure to maintain the "laser-like focus" that schools across America are being begged to employ, the problem being when that "laser-like focus" begins to function more like tunnel-vision.

She provides an important voice for students who have been required to sit through what seems like pointless instruction that does not feel relevant to their lives or their futures.

She discusses the various expectations that business leaders, politicians, civic leaders, and parents have of public schools, including, but not limited to, preparing students for college, creating responsible citizens to ensure that our country continues to nurture the ideals of freedom and equality; preparing students for the global economy so America can maintain its competitive edge; the need to instill better moral compasses in our children by teaching social skills; self-monitoring strategies; responsibility to the greater good; and a respect for authority. There are others who want schools to provide free child care and free meals, develop students' self-esteem, teach life skills and good work habits to combat the effects of bad parenting, promote good health, and provide vocational preparation.

But most importantly, "It's the Mission, Not the Mandates" provides a clear path for improving America's public schools. Interesting philosophy on current issues in public education

"if you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea." Dr. Fast describes in clear detail the current disconnect between what society truly needs from public education and what is being asked of it. The philosophical point of view detailed in this book will resonate with anyone concerned about the state of public education today. This book needs to be in the hands of not just teachers and administrators. It will definitely speak to the hearts of those who public education serves as well.

Join the Revolution!

This book is a must read for anyone who has anything to do with education, but especially for those contemplating going into the profession. Unless you are willing to be part of the “revolution” which Dr. Fast suggests, you should walk away. Have no doubt that the descriptions that Dr. Fast portrays in describing the state of education today and the stakeholders involved are overwhelming but highly accurate.

Teaching is, or was, a second career for me; one I felt called to do later in life, not only to help young people but also because I wanted to know why so many were failing to become successful. Many people advised me not to do it, but being hardheaded I knew I had to find out for myself. I was determined to work in a school that was failing, because I knew that was where I would find the truth. My experiences in and out of the classroom over the last five years have been an eye opening training in itself. A month ago I walked away from my high school Civics class so disillusioned by a system that seems determined, albeit unintentionally, to destroy itself. I am thankful I found this very inspiring work by Amy Fast.

As I read the book, so many memories came flooding in, i.e., being told to focus on the “bubble” students, to manage the classroom by controlling students through rewards and force, being led by well-intentioned administrators whose sole focus had become moving their school performance score up so many points, and too many teachers who were just waiting until they could retire or move to a better school. If teacher apathy wasn’t enough, one of the biggest obstacles I encountered was student apathy that was ingrained by the time they made it to high school. Learning had no purpose for them but was only what they had to do until they moved on to the next class. The advice I always received was to be more engaging, but my question was always “How do I engage young people whose life and educational experiences have left them with no ability or even the desire to self-regulate long enough to be engaged?”

The beauty of It’s the Mission, not the Mandates: Defining the Purpose of Public Education, however, is not simply its accuracy, but the fact that it gives hope and strategies for real change. I have argued for much of what Dr. Fast advocates, without much success. The process is not something that will be easy or overnight. As she advises, it will definitely take a full-fledged revolution and not just reformation. It is not something that individual teachers can achieve, because it requires and demands all stakeholders participate. I may not see the end of the war for our children’s future, but I definitely intend to try and be a stirring force that keeps the embers glowing. When I left the classroom, I needed to see in black and white what it takes to make education work and that it can be accomplished. This wonderful book conveys the passion it takes to do this successfully. Thank you Dr. Fast!
