hobo jungles

You gotta trust your gut, not this book. I've been to hobo jungles where there's nothing but low scum who'd cut your throat for a loaf of old bread. I travel alone for that reason. There's a lot of hobo gangs on the road too that will use you for about everything and rat you out to save their own hides. In this way, you need to trust basically just yourself and travel that way. This has a few helpful things, but it relies on "abstracts" too much.

If you are sleeping, find a place that is completely isolated and away from cops, drunks, hobos, or anyone. Preferably it is to be in some forest, where you can hide at night. Go to the city during the day and get food and water, avoid cops at all times, since in some small towns they will charge you for loitering, and if they don't like you, will beat you to a pulp and toss you in the can with a hefty fine. If you can't pay it, you'll have to work for their "slave labor" doing rural work. They do this so they don't pay actual workers.

Be wary of people trying to be your "friend", take it from me, 89% of the time it's a set up for a church, or a rat for the town cops, or just some nut job trying to whack you later in the alley.

Also, if you aren't knowledgeable in 'Freight hopping' or train hopping, don't do it, it is both deadly and dangerous. The trainyard bulls will beat you, plus you may lose your life quite easily. Also, if you are on the road trying to "get drunk" all the time, then that's spelling trouble as well. You need a clean head and your senses when living on the road.

If you aren't used to skinning small critters for dinner, then don't stay out in the boondocks, go near a town where you can get old food for free or cheap.

Fun Read even if you aren't going to hit the rails

This is a very useful handbook if you're going to be anywhere on the spectrum of hoboing, from basic hiking/camping advice - to the hardcore of what type of roadkill is edible and what isn't. It was a fun escape into the world of hoboism from the mundane computer and cubicle world.

Enjoyable Reading - Highly Recommended

"The Hobo Handbook" was recommended by a friend what knows I enjoy books on "roughing it". First off, I appreciate the intentional "grubby" look and feel of the book, the cover is rough and the pages look stained and worn, not unlike the first publishing of my sister's book Possum living: How to live well without a job and with almost no money (this is the link to the old 1970s cover, not the 2010 re-release). The tone of the writing is friendly and often humorous, without being condescending or judgmental, and makes this a fun and easy read.

The very first sections is the "Hobo Aptitude Test" and taking it will quickly tell you if a life on the road and hopping train cars is meant for you. The following sections include such useful information like how to hop on train car without getting squashed (or "greasing the tracks", as the author calls it), finding "Hobo Friendly" accommodations, grooming and health concerns on the road, reading the Hobo signs (yes, there is secret Hobo code language), and even useful information on knot tying. Peppered throughout are handy tips, short anecdotes, and tales of "celebrity" Hobos (Jack London, for example).

This is an entertaining and enjoyable book, even for those of use who will never take a chance at jumping on a moving train or intentionally sleep under the stars with only a newspaper as a blanket.
