Oh god why must they do this to me

This play was amazing. I read it all in one sitting, early in the morning (the best time to read a play in my opinion). It is very powerful, and also it is unbelievably adorable and definitely worth a read. I don't want to spoil too much to the people who haven't read it yet, but all I will say is that the title will soon make all the sense in the world (I really really wished it didn't) I also loved how they mentioned one of my favourite books: Maurice! This play is really really great and I hope I can see it performed. ...Even though I'll be crying hysterically the whole time...

A Must-Have In Your Personal Professional Library

This book is so many things I've been looking for all in one place. It is a goldmine, a bank of powerful strategies, which are critical for building number sense (the foundation of all mathematics). I especially love the visual routines. These help students "see" numbers and deepen their understanding of how numbers work (how they can be flexible by decomposing them). This understanding makes their learning so much more meaningful and practical when it is transferred to "mental math", which is used daily in the real world. As I was reading this, I eagerly implemented what I was reading and used many of the resources before I even finished the book! I teach third grade math and found many great ideas for differentiating my instruction-for my remedial groups all the way to modifications of the strategies to challenge my high performers. Reading this book inspired me to start a "vertical team" book study, open to any interested K-5 math teachers (gen ed and ESE) at my school. I can't wait to see the effects of the great conversations we've been having!

Not just for the K-3 Crowd!

I bought this book thinking that I would still be working with younger students for the upcoming school year. Of course then I get moved back to my first love: upper elementary. I had the book though and decided to read it anyway. Gosh am I glad I did!! Students all over the country struggle with REAL number sense and the routines and ideas in this book are awesome and will be relatively easy to implement. They don't all have to be used but it's set up in a way that you can use what works for you as long as you make it a routine that is predictable.

I will have 4th and 5th graders this year, most of whom scored lowest in "numbers and operations" on their end-of-year math assessments. I am excited to adapt the ideas in this book for my older friends and hopefully help them to really gain an awareness and true understanding of numbers instead of just figuring out how to get an awesome. Well worth every penny I paid for it!

a real source of breakthrough ideas

I have two pre-school boys, 5 and 4. I noticed my five year old developing a lot of enthusiasm for numbers and I recognized his "number sense" was pretty good. I wanted to take a queue from his enthusiasm and help him develop that better so I got this book on number sense. Even before it arrived, I was reading the preview and was impressed with the Early Number Sense Learning Trajectory. Right away I recognized some things that could help both my boys. After I received the book, I've been reading through it and it's full of ideas that I can use for years to come. The book is helping me understand the learning process my boys are going through, and how to plan and implement routines that will help them develop an advanced sense of number.

The book has useful ideas for pre-school through most of the elementary grades. The cover indicates K-3 but there's some 4th grade examples inside. More importantly, there's routines that will help people develop their number sense from wherever it's at now, no matter their age.

My boys are examples of the early stages. My little one had some sense of magnitude, one-to-one correspondence in counting, and cardinality, but if you showed him four or five things he was still counting them. I started to work with him in subitizing with dot cards. In just a few days, he's gone from subitizing three up to six. We're making this a routine, for him with a single die (from a pair of six-sided dice), dot-pattern cards, and the dominoes whose two halves total to maybe 8. I'm using a ten wand and introducing ways to make a number. We also do choral counting as a family and we're starting to include him on counting around the circle.

My older boy was excited about the dot patterns when I showed the kids the cards I had made. At first they just went up to six, but I told him I had some harder ones with more dots. Right away he tells me, "I know if it has five and five that's ten!" He was developing his sense of unitization.

I had worked with him, introducing number lines, both in abstract, and as a thermometer, ruler, tape measure, weight scale, and the clock. I also showed him number circles on the circular clock, scale, thermometer dial, and a circular day of the week and month calendar I made. He could read any analog clock to the minute with or without numbers printed on it and had a pretty good grasp of modular arithmetic.

For him, I brought out the dominoes that go up to 18 (two 9-dot patterns). I'm also using two dot-pattern cards or both dice at the same time. He's telling me things like, "I know this is 17 because nine and nine are eighteen but this one is missing one dot." He has good mastery of ten, ways to make ten, and factors of ten (he tells me that he knows 80 and 80 is 160 because he knows that 8 and 8 is sixteen). He also counts into the thousands, races through backward counting by one from 100, and skip counts by two and ten. He's developing a better sense of compensation, and I think he will also get better at mental math with numbers other than factors of 2, 5 and 10. I really look forward to having more in-depth discussion with him about things like ways to make a number, and having him explain his thinking in addition to the answer.

In recollecting my own education in math, I distinctly remember a decisive turning point during the 4th grade. In 3rd grade I was loving it and excelling at the level of adding and subtracting fractions. By 4th, math became algorithmic, tedious, and I began to struggle. The only time I really enjoyed math after that was when I discovered Euclidean geometry. What I was missing was the kind of number sense the routines in this book help to develop when they're practiced daily. Because of that, the only strategies I had for problem solving were inefficient, tedious, and algorithmic. If you think about it, a long-division problem is whole bunch of simple subtraction and multiplication problems bundled into an algorithm. If you have strong metal math skills and the ability to pick efficient strategies to solve the component problems, everything will go well. If not, a whole sheet of long division problems is tedium beyond what one can bear. It's the same thing with quadractic equations and polynomials. Unfortunately my own educators focused on explaining the algorithms without recognizing the gaps in my skills and number sense. I believe this happened because they simply didn't know what to do about that anyway. This book has the answers.

Marcus Schaefer is Assistant Professor of Computer Science at DePaul University. He holds degrees in computer science and mathematics from the University of Chicago and the Universitat Karlsruhe. Why We Wrote This Book

Intended for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate course in algorithms, this book is based on our combined 25 years of experience in teaching this course. Our major goals in writing this book were to

• Emphasize design techniques.
• Show that algorithms are fun and exciting.
• Include real-world applications.
• Provide numerous worked examples and exercises.

Faced with a new computational problem, a designer will often be able to solve it by using one of the algorithms in this book, perhaps after modifying or adapting it slightly. However, some problems cannot be solved by any of the algorithms in this book. For this reason, we present a repertoire of design techniques that can be used to solve the problem and help the reader to develop intuition about which techniques are likely to succeed. The chapters on NP-completeness and how to deal with it also tell how to recognize problems that are hard to solve and which techniques are available in that case.

Working with algorithms should be fun and exciting. The design of algorithms is a creative task requiring the solution of new problems and old problems in disguise. To be successful, we believe that it is important to enjoy the challenge that a new problem poses. To this end, we have included more examples and exercises of a combinatorial and recreational nature than is typical for a book of this type. All too often the challenge of an unsolved problem is experienced as a threat rather than as an opportunity, and we hope that these examples and exercises help to remove the threat.

Examples of real-word applications of algorithms in this book include data compression in Section 7.5, and the Boyer-Moore-Horspool algorithm in Section 9.4, which is used as part of the implementation of agrep. Most sections of the book introduce a motivating example in the first paragraph. The closest-pair problem (Section 5.3) begins with a pattern recognition example, and Section 8.4, which is concerned with the longest-common-subsequence problem, begins with a discussion of the analysis of proteins.

Algorithm design and analysis are best learned by experience. For this reason, we provide large numbers of worked examples and exercises. Worked examples show how to deal with algorithms, and exercises let the reader practice the techniques. There are over 300 worked examples throughout the book. These examples clarify and show how to develop algorithms, demonstrate applications of the theory, elucidate proofs, and help to motivate the material. The book contains over 1450 exercises, from routine to challenging, which were carefully developed through classroom testing. Close attention was paid to clarity and precision. Because some instant feedback is essential for students, we provide answers to about one-third of the end-of-section exercises (marked with "S" in the exercises) in the back of the book. Solutions to the remaining end-of-section exercises are reserved for instructors (see the Instructor Supplement section that follows).

Prerequisites

The principal computer science prerequisite is a data structures course that covers stacks, queues, linked lists, trees, and graphs. A course in discrete mathematics that covers logic, asymptotic notation (e.g., "big oh" notation), and recurrence relations and their solution by iteration is the main mathematics prerequisite. We do not use advanced methods such as generating functions. In one or two places, we use some basic concepts from calculus. The mathematics topics and data structures used in this book are summarized in Chapters 2 and 3. Some or all of these chapters can be used for reference or review or incorporated into an algorithms course as needed.

Content

Following the first three chapters (containing an introduction, mathematics topics, and data structures), the book presents five chapters that emphasize design techniques.

Chapter 4 features searching techniques, including novel applications such as region-finding in digital pictures.

The divide-and-conquer technique is introduced in Chapter 5. Among the problems considered are a tiling problem, finding the closest pair of points in the plane, and Strassen's matrix-product algorithm. Chapter 6 deals with sorting and selection. Divide-and-conquer is used to develop many of the algorithms in this chapter.

Chapter 7 shows how to use the greedy method to develop algorithms. After showing how to use the greedy method in a simple setting (coin changing), we present Kruskal's algorithm, Prim's algorithm, Dijkstra's algorithm, Huffman's algorithm, and a solution of the continuous-knapsack problem.

Chapter 8 covers the technique of dynamic programming. As in Chapter 7, we first show how dynamic programming operates in a simple setting (computing Fibonacci numbers). We next revisit the coin-changing problem (from Chapter 7 on the greedy method) and contrast dynamic programming with the greedy method. We then discuss optimal grouping of matrices, the longest-common-subsequence problem, and the algorithms of Floyd and Warshall.

Chapter 9 discusses text-searching techniques, including the Knuth-Morris-Pratt and Boyer-Moore-Horspool algorithms, and algorithms for non-exact searching.

In Chapter 10, we investigate NP-completeness—a theoretical approach to recognizing and understanding the limitations of algorithms. We include many examples from different areas such as cellular phone networks, games, and biological computing to illustrate the ubiquity and universality of NPcompleteness.

It is widely believed that NP-complete problems cannot be solved efficiently by algorithms. Nevertheless, these problems arise in applications and have to be solved in practice. Chapter 11, Coping with NP-Completeness, presents a collection of techniques originating in practice and theory to deal with NP-complete problems. Among the approaches discussed are approximation, parameterization, and use of heuristics.

Chapter 12 presents fundamental algorithms for parallel architectures, including algorithms for the PRAM and sorting networks, and offers an introduction to computation in distributed environments.

Pedagogy

Each section (except Section 12.1, which is an introductory section) concludes with Section Exercises. The book contains over 1100 Section Exercises. Some of these exercises check for basic understanding of the material (e.g., some ask for a trace of an algorithm), while others check for a deeper understanding of the material (e.g., some investigate alternative algorithms). Exercises that are more challenging than average are indicated with a star, *.

Each chapter ends with a Notes section, which is followed by Chapter Exercises. Notes sections contain suggestions for further reading and pointers to references. Chapter Exercises, some of which have hints, integrate the material of the chapter. The book contains over 350 Chapter Exercises. They are, on the whole, more challenging than the Section Exercises. We have included some very challenging Chapter Exercises marked with two stars. These will probably require instructor guidance, and some are appropriate for a small project.

Lower bounds for problems are integrated into the chapters that discuss those problems rather than being segregated into separate chapters. For example, after presenting several sorting algorithms, we discuss a lower bound for comparison-based sorting (Section 6.3).

We present and discuss many recent results, for example, parameterized complexity (Section 11.4), a recent area of research.

Algorithms are written in pseudocode that is close to the syntax of the familiar C, C++, and Java family of languages. Data types, semicolons, obscure features of the languages, and so on, are not used because we have found that specifying algorithms by writing actual code obscures the algorithm description and makes it difficult for someone not familiar with the language to understand the algorithm. The pseudocode used is completely described

Figures illustrate concepts, show how algorithms work, elucidate proofs, and motivate the material. Several figures illustrate proofs of theorems. The captions of these figures provide additional explanation and insight into the proofs.

Attention has been given to finding the most direct and comprehensible proofs of correctness as examples, see Theorem 7.2.5 from which the correctness of both Kruskal's and Prim's algorithms are derived and the proof of the correctness of Dijkstra's algorithm (Theorem 7.4.5).

We present several examples and arguments to show that our time bounds for algorithms are sharp. See, for example, the subsection in Section 7.3, Lower Bound Time Estimate, which shows that the upper bound for the worst-case time of Prim's algorithm using a binary heap is sharp, and the discussion just before Theorem 7.5.4, which shows that the upper bound for the worst-case time of Huffman's algorithm is sharp.,

Difficult Introduction to Algorithms

We are using this book as a text in our Computer Science II course. Unfortunately, this is a somewhat difficult book to try and learn from. The descriptions are very dense, filled with many proofs, and little in the way of an explanation as to what an algorithm does, or what it's purpose is. In other words, rather than simply stating what an algorithm is used for and the general ideas behind it in a couple clear paragraphs, it spreads this information out between unclear and hard to follow proofs (that skip over important steps), using difficult language, and between multiple "failed attempts" which try to show how to arrive at the optimal way of implementing an algorithm without clearly stating so.

I want to state now that I spend a lot of time reading dense texts from other computer science books, to Microsoft documentation, to even some Wikipedia articles. While I can bear through this book, it is one of the more difficult things I've had to deal with. In my opinion, its worse than the level of perceived greatness from teachers, and practical uselessness to students as is found in many math books that can prove everything and explain almost nothing.

However, I have not had a chance to check out any other computer science texts, so perhaps as the last reviewer stated, this *IS* one of the better ones...

If you're a professor, before choosing this book, or any other really, try to see if it at least has clear explanations in addition to whatever else one might want. Because, as a student who often relies on the textbook for learning things, this one is near impossible.

Good book, explains many algorithms in more plain, easier to understand English than the Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen, Lieserson, Rivest, and Stein. Although it is different in the amount and focus of material. Both books used in conjunction is helpful.

Good introduction to SJM ideas

Books such as S Gurumurthys "India's Time has Come" are much needed but unfortunately too few in my opinion. While major economies in the west have had the benefit of watchful writers and thinkers commenting on economic principles/trends, India has had the misfortune of having a very vast number of intellectuals and economists who have blindly toed the western thought process and not given due consideration to the very specific Indian scenario. This is why "India's Time has Come" stands out with its bold commentaries on Indian economy, family, behaviours and government policies.
The book starts out with 6 brief chapters on the glaring problems affecting the Western model of economics. I found the chapters on the US Fed, bankrupting households and the forex fraud to be most illuminating. Admittedly, for a untrained reader on economics (I am an engineer by profession), I found the going a little rough on a couple of chapters but nothing to put off a person with a casual interest in these matters. The chapters are concise and supply plenty of information and ideas.
The remainder of the book has a number of brief chapters covering a subject of very vast scope. The chapters are more like essays put together with topics including and not limited to FDI, government interference in family, economic and social importance of family, state of farming in india, Nandigram, State suppport to industries, Swadeshi concept etc. Needless to say, a 136 page book cannot do justice to the topics being covered. The ideas in each of the chapters are quite fascinating and many need further study and research. One of the things that makes this book so interesting is that it runs contrary to the policies being followed right now in most parts of the world. This book might be the first hint of the pendulum starting its swing the other way.
"India's Time has Come" plugs a hole in the study of India. Indias urbanites being cut off from the realities of rural life will be well advised to read this book to understand some of the economic difficulties facing our rural citizens. Individuals like myself, who having read up on countless books dealing with the western model, will be excited to note that finally there is a book that deals with the specifics of the indian situation. Having said that, i do hope Sri S Gurumurthy and SJM will come out with more such publications to educate the deracinated urban elite of India.
There are some editing errors, that can be corrected. The author speaks of Alan Greenspan and his usage of the phrase "irrational exhuberance" with reference to the Nikkei index. The dates mentioned for this are in contradiction between pg16 and 12. Also the book has absolutely no references. A list of books for further reading would have been beneficial, although i suspect there are very few such publications out in the market right now.
Overall, i would have rated 5 stars if not for the above minor issues. Looking forward to more from S Gurumurthy on this topic. This book has a "Buy" suggestion from me.

Shows there is a world full of Grandmas and each one is special.

My granddaughter loves the childlike illustrations and brightly colored pages. This is a book she enjoys by herself because the art seems as important as the words. Being a long-distance Grandma, I like that this book keeps Grandma in the forefront of a child's mind. It shows there is a world full of Grandmas and each one is special.

The Grandma Book is Delightful!

The Grandma Book is delightfully written with simple, primary-color filled pages that grab a little one's attention. It is great for helping little ones to see how grandmas, and people in general, are different and in celebrating those differences. A must for every Grandma to give to their precious grandchildren.

Great Book, Needs Punctuation

The Grandma Book is cute book by Todd Parr that celebrates grandmothers-and their differences.

"Some grandmas like to make you eat a lot. Some grandmas like to make you things. All grandmas like to hear from you." (Punctuation added. That's right. There is no punctuation in this picture book until the final page which is a bit like an author's note since it says "Love, Todd". The lack of punctuation is my only dislike.)

The illustrations are bold and bright and have the bold black outline that is also popular in our beloved Maisy books. I definitely recommend this book to families who want a little reminder of the love of grandmothers and how special they are. One of my favorite sets of pages says, "Some grandmas live with a grandpa. Some grandmas live with their friends." (Once again, punctuation added.) I think The Grandma Book is great for a wide range of ages! I highly recommend it, and just wish that author Todd Parr had used periods in his writing.
