Catlovers, This Book is for You

If you are an ailurophile, then this is a book for you. Part memoir of life with his own pride (5 cats), part animal behavioral research, part love story, Masson draws upon literature and history and "the wonderful true stories of cat experts and cat lovers around the world, Jeffrey Masson vividly explores the delights and mysteries of the feline heart."

He explores nine emotional states of being or behaviors, ranging from narcissim to love to contentment to curiosity (which does not kill them) to anger and playfulness. Masson both confirms and debunks what people believe they know about cats. For example," are cats selfish?" Are they really narcissists? Self-centered? Reminding the reader that to think so is to interpret a non-human by human standards of behavior, the answer is, of course, no. "Cats may appear self-centered, but they watch us all the time, taking us in They see us; they notice us--a far cry from vanity."

As I write this, I have a cat in my lap. He wants to be there; he want to rub noses, and came in the room, fussing to get my attention (I know, that is my interpretation!) He wants to be petted. He wants to be be with me. As Masson points out, over and over, they want to be with us--just on their terms. In a while, Festus will want to get down and I will let him--until the next time he wants to be with me.

Does he need me, as Masson asks? I want to think so . Masson argues that as cats are happy to be themselves, maybe not. But they do love us and like being with us.

Catlovers, read this book for its "surprises and insights" that offer a new perspective on the deep connection between humans and their feline friends," written in clear and lucid and often beautiful prose.

I have been using this book endlessly! So many drawings that my sketchbook is almost full, this book is fantastic for anyone who appreciate classic horror comic. Bryan Baugh is certainly a genius and he will show you how to draw amazing horror figures. Steve Miller does the same. I recommend for everyone to get this book, it's a must have for horror fan.

this book is a good book if you want to draw scary skeletons and stuff like that. in my opinion, i thought it was cool because it has an interview plus art from Vince Locke ( the guy who does cannibal corpes's artwork among many other).

These are early reader chapter books (Level J on the RIGBY scale) for first/second grade students. They are fiction and written for amusement - not intended to introduce a child to a new cousin. The keep early elementary students interested in reading. We love the series!

He is a really good reader so if you want your child to read ...

We bought the entire series and my 1st grader loves them. He is a really good reader so if you want your child to read them then the average reader should be able to get through them by mid-2nd grade. Each book in the series touches on all of the plethora of emotions that kids this age experience and helps the kids see what started off as a negative experience in a more positive way at the end. Kids at this age tend to see things in black/white, good/bad but these books tend to show the gray areas of what started off as a negative situation.

About the Author
Orrin H. Pilkey, deemed "America’s foremost philosopher of the beaches," by the New York Times, is James B. Duke Professor Emeritus of Geology at the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. Pilkey is a coauthor (with Keith C. Pilkey) of Global Climate Change: A Primer, published by Duke University Press, and of twenty books in the Press's Living with the Shore series, edited by Pilkey and William J. Neal. In 2013, The Orrin Pilkey Marine Science and Conservation Genetics Center opened at the Duke Marine Lab in Beaufort, North Carolina. Pilkey lives in Hillsborough, N.C.

J. Andrew G. Cooper is Professor of Coastal Studies in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Ulster. He and Pilkey are coauthors (with William J. Neal and Joseph T. Kelley) of The World's Beaches: A Global Guide to the Science of the Shoreline and coeditors of Pitfalls of Shoreline Stabilization. Well known for his advocacy of nonintervention on shorelines and his work on beaches and coasts worldwide, Cooper lives in the town of Coleraine in Northern Ireland.

An essential and fascinating read for everyone who loves a beach - who doesn't?

This is a must read for beach lovers and for those who live in beach communities all over the world.

Will our beaches survive? That is the essential question posed in this high readable book by two research professors who traveled the world and combed the literature to present in nearly page turner prose the warnings about what could be the end of our beaches and our beach towns.

For your safety, for the safety and preservation of your beach community, and for all those curious about earth’s complicated system of renewal is allowed to remain as it is, this short book, divided into easily read sections, is informative and scholarly without being boring.

This is an essential read for all those who love a beach – who doesn’t?

Made my best of 2015 list!

This book documents the perils of putting permanent structures (i.e. houses) on barrier islands and coastlines that have an annoying habit of moving (despite the Army Corps of Engineers efforts to pin them in place). This book also takes a hard look at how problems of coastal development magnify in the face of climate change and sea level rise.

Michael Laskier served as the Executive Director of the International Sephardic Educational Center, and is currently a professor of history and political science at Ashqelon College of Bar-Ilan University and Beit Berl College in Israel. He is the author of The Jews of Egypt 1920-1970: In the Midst of Zionism, Anti-Semitism, and the Middle East Conflict, also published by NYU Press.

A good book, but could be more complete

This is one of the few books, if not the only one, on Egyptian Jews that mention the detention camps of Abu Zaabal and Tura.
I knew a person who was one of about 400 to 500 Jews interned in Egypt during the Six Day War for up to 3 years. He stayed 3 years and 15 days between 1967 and 1970. He was tortured: ordered to walk on broken glass, beaten on the head repeatedly. Some of the younger inmates were raped.
The book has a lot of details about property sequestration, and the dispossession of Egyptian Jewry. The author seems to be detail oriented. However he did not detail our suffering and torture in Abu Zaabal and Tura.
The author is a little bit dry, but that preference is a drawback, since as a result, he may have avoided talking about torture. I encourage him to go with a second edition, but before he does that, he should talk to the Abu Zaabal and Tura internees.

Essential piece of history

If you're interested at all in the Second Exodus from Egypt, this is an essential book. Laskier reviews the early 20th century history of the Jewish community in Egypt, and then runs down, year by year, how nearly all Jews left Egypt. He differentiates the conditions of each year in the critical period from the end of WWII until the late 60s, and reviews the different exit routes and destinations and sources of help for different streams of the Second Exodus.

This isn't a set of anecdotes - it is real and solid history. The bibliography checks out, and the notes are useful in themselves.

Needs major restructuring

This book has useful nuggets but one needs to be patient to weed through ill-structured content.

Problem1: Examples and content repeats quite a bit across chapters, but unfortunately never discusses things properly at one place. In every edition authors have added chapters but seemed to have forgotten what they have already discussed in earlier chapters.

Problem2: Many suggestions, scenarios have been incompletely discussed. Without enough information one has to assume quite a bit about the scenario, problem, solution and the value of it. It is okay if it had happened once in a while, but this sprinkling of anecdotes without fully discussing is rampant in this book.

Problem3: It is quite verbose.

Problem4: Keeps on changing the depth of the discussion. The discussion is overall at high-level, however at times authors would go really deep to discuss details around some random topic eg calculation of silhouette scores. The primary focus seemed to be business people and not statistics students. Going deep "selectively" is also a big problem in this book.

This book has the potential to become a really good book, but it needs major restructuring.

In a field evolving as dynamically as data science, 2011 seems a long time ago, and I've since bought a number of the newer titles out there. Still, however, I often find myself reverting to Linoff and Barry's text for a lucid explanation of, or interesting take on a particular data mining subject area.

The book is thorough (at 800+ pages this should be the expectation) and technical, but isn't really a how-to manual in that it stops short of containing actual code or instructions. That's not an issue, however, as such instructional information is available elsewhere if needed.

My only complaint about the work is that it is a little redundant and otherwise verbose at times. I hope a fourth edition is forthcoming, and that it is a little more tightly edited.

Good Book - Highly Recommended.

I got this book for a class on Data-Mining and I found it to be a very good book. It has good visuals to help the reader understand the concepts in the book and maintains a good sense of humor throughout so reading it doesn't seem as dense as some of my typical statistics books. My only criticism of the book would be that it never discusses common software platforms for performing these tasks. While I understand that he probably didn't want to favor a particular platform over another, it seems that introducing the major ones could be helpful for people that may be very used to using just one.

A life changing book if you are willing to listen and DO SOMETHING.

If you're really serious about getting off your a** and doing something about feeling better and looking better, this is the book for you. Craig doesn't pull any punches though. If you're looking for empathy, this is the wrong book for you. If you really want to live the rest of your life feeling positive about yourself and dealing with ups and downs, than Craig Harper is your man.

Great approach to self improvement

I subscribe to Craig's blog postings so I know how he writes - straightforward, conversational, pulls no punches - just what I need! I like how the book is structured in such a way that you can just dip into it a chapter at a time and those chapters are short and not necessarily meant to be read in order. If you're looking for some inspiration, direction or just a kick up the backside then this is your book :)

Very satisfied with The Benchside Introduction To Fly Tying book. Illustrations & instructions are very clear. The spiral binding lets the book lay flat on the desk a big plus. The book contains pictures of completed flies along with the page number to find the tying instructions. There are many examples of tying tools and their uses, along with explanations of the materials used in fly tying. The most unique concept of the book is the split page construction. The upper section of a page contains the fly tying instructions, and refers the tier to the lower page number for extra tying instructions when they are needed. This format allows all the instructions to be seen at one time without having to flip back and forth through the pages. All around a good book for the money. I personally would like to see a saltwater fly version of this book.

Outstanding reference for the 53 listed Fly Patterns. Unique format allows you to stay on the fly pattern while cross referencing the specific techniques used to tie each pattern. For the beginner, this book walks you through the basic Materials and Methods in a logical and straight forward manor. Highly recommend this book.

I have been sea fishing on and off for 46 years, I had a yacht for 16 years. Now I am retied at 70. I have two or three hobbies and spend a lot of time on my computer. I wanted to do something to get me out of the house and to meet people, and living in New Zealand which is one of the best places in the world for Trout fishing. I thought I would try having a go at Fly fishing. So I took up Fly-fishing three years ago. I joined the local Anglers club, and found it was very active, going away for the week end, staying in lodges to fish in lakes or rivers. Getting away mid-week is good.
I have just finished a ten week Wednesday night Fly Tying course, that was very interesting. One member had this book, The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying. which looked a must have, of good quality paper and cover, well made to last a life time, nice clear photos and well explained step-by-step instructions. I like the Split-Pages. This is it, I think it is the Bees knees for Fly fishermen that tie there own flies. I highly recommend it.
