A thorough-going review of Bluegrass Guitar

Nygaard covers bluegrass guitar in as succinct a manner possible without losing its history or major teaching points. For that reason alone I give it five stars. This book is not intended for beginners. As a supplement to a solid understanding of bluegrass guitar roots, I recommend this for the modern player who wants to know where they are coming from.

The content is great, but it seems to be delivered with little patience. Each example is played so quickly. Even the slow tracks move quickly and they are only played once.

If you are a beginner I'd definitely say start elsewhere.

This was purchased for a friend who doesn't have internet service. He had reviewed my personal copy which I ordered to compliment the private instruction I am taking through the Bluegrass School at East Tennessee State University. My friend was browsing through my copy and was very impressed with the contents that would further his study of and learning to play the guitar. Sometimes we get the instructor to use some sections of the Bluegrass Guitar Essentials for class time review and homework. This instruction book is very complimentary with our private instructions. Great study guide!

About the Author
Award-winning journalist and author Brian Krans lives and works in the Midwest. A Constant Suicide is his first novel. Like his characters, Krans' experience at college was filled with many hours in party houses and even longer hours catching up in the library afterward. It was the hectic lifestyle of a student-partier and other forces that sent Krans into a state of depression that ended in a suicide attempt his junior year, only to be rescued by his roommate and cousin. In November 2006, in conjunction with the Q-C November Novelists, Krans expanded a short story he wrote at Winona State University into A Constant Suicide. Between a full-time job as a newspaper reporter, a weekend job as a bartender and volunteering with teenage kids, Krans wrote this part-fiction, part-memoir of his college experience. He is twenty-five years old.

Required reading

A Constant Suicide should be required reading for incoming college freshmen. Brian Kran's debut novel is brutally honest about the struggle for identity and the tragic consequences sometimes associated with it. I'd recommend this book to those college-bound and to those who'd like to reminisce about a period of life full of endless possibility.

Outstanding!

I did not know what to expect when I began this novel. However, Brian Krans' first novel, A Constant Suicide, is well written and developed. It sucked me in right away. The story jumps around from present to past to excerpts from a journal entry and back to the present. The characters were easy to identify with. We all can look back to college years and remember the pressures and stigmas and cliches. Everyone will get something different out of this book. Sometimes the people you are closest to are the farthest away.

I got this book off a list from Yahoo answers of 'books that are like fight club' - thought I'd give this one a try.

I found that it started with the philosophy of the antagonist being pushed into every other character however I found the last 3 quarters of the book very good.

Sophocles (496-406 BC) lived through the greater part of the long struggle with Sparta and died a few months after Euripides. He is credited with developing the tragic form and his surviving tragedies are masterpieces of construction. Methuen Drama publishes two volumes of his plays.

Not the same cover...

I really enjoyed reading this story. It had a really interesting view on fate and trying to change your's. The only thing I was disappointed about is that the cover isn't the same. My cover is green and has a person's face with a bandage over it's eyes in the background. The pages and everything, however, still correspond.

This is a 5 star + Betty Neels hits the mark again:When Professor Hugo Bendinck comes across cutie red headed Theodosia Chapman he loses his heart with out a whimper.
But he thinks he is too old for her, he is, but love doesn't care.
Hugo chases Theodosia until she catches him.
This is a 2 star Margaret Way not so good romance. Reporter Rowena Warrender is fighting the attraction of being with her estranged husband Kelvin or dealing with her little girl Tessa who won't talk to anyone but her mom or her imaginary friend.
Kel gets Ronnie to come home but all for the wrong reasons. And he gives us a idea why Ronnie left him in the first place.
This is a 5 star Rebecca Winters finally gets out of Utah. And when she does love comes to little Sarah when she escapes a kidnapper and turns up in a blizzard outside man shy Brooke Longley. Vance McClain shows up to get as much information from the child about her kidnappers and he falls for Brook as much as she does for him. But little Sarah is the tiny cupid that gets the romance where it should be.

A twist to old characters

I loved all three stories, but I especially loved Betty Neels. She added a twist to her usual characters. It was wonderfully refreshing to see more of the doctors thoughts and feelings. The heroine was definitely a twist of character. Her personality was more outgoing than many of the others. Highly recommend for a good read and start the holidays out right.
