Bittersweet Deception by Liz Fielding ~ Harlequin Romance Subscription #252 ~ October 1995

4 1/2 Stars! ~ When Kate had accepted the position of setting up a posh tearoom in the English countryside, it was like prayers answered. Only when she arrived at the estate where the tearoom would open, she discovers that a man who had rudely judged her as having lose morals was now her boss. Jay is rather surprised to discover the beautiful chef in his kitchen garden, had she not signed an iron clad contract with his aunt over the tearoom, he would have sent her packing. Jay has a very cynical outlook when it comes to women, as they always seem to be wanting to use his power and wealth for their ambitions. Kate's had her heart bruised badly by a former fiance, and has built a cold shell around herself. Jay however seems to be the flame to melt that ice and she resorts to a lie to keep him at arms length. Of course, no matter what they resolve to themselves, fate has a way of keeping them off balance and in each others arms!

I adore a heroine who has a habit of letting her tongue get away from her. Kate is delightful! When Jay is about she sparks with life, and Jay can't help pushing her buttons as he thoroughly enjoys Kate's fireworks. This was a roller coaster ride to HEA!

Funny and Great

Kierkegaard is one of my gods, and this book is true, but hilarously funny at the same time. The comic-book-like illustrations are wonderful. This is the first "Introducing" book I've come across, but I will probably read more.

Soon the civilians were being rounded up into Japanese prison camps, and General Douglas MacArthur, commander of U.S. Army Forces Far East, fled the country, promising to return. This is Leanne’s story.

True stories are more amazing than fiction!

This slim memoir details the extraordinary wartime experiences of Leanne Blinzler Noe and her sister, Ginny, in the Philippines. Leanne arrives in the islands at the age of three (Ginny is two) when her father goes there to work at a gold mine. Her mother dies and the two girls move to a convent school. MacArthur is in the Philippines but then leaves and things begin to heat up. The Japanese take control soon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 and Leanne's father is sent to an Internment camp. Although the girls are able to stay at an orphanage for two year, they eventually join their father at the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in 1944 for a year before MacArthur returns to liberate the camp. Although thousands die during this imprisonment, Noe's voice gives us the perspective of an 11-year old, with her interest in friends and food (which was scarce). This memoir gives one an idea of what it was like for a child without the heaviness of an adult perspective. The book is co-written with Leanne's daughter, Barbara Noe, whose related articles (one published in the LA Times) included in the Appendix add a professional journalistic touch. Barbara's writing experience is evident in the polished feel of the narrative. The author's photographs are also a welcome addition. Because I'm a map-lover, I was wishing for a more thorough map of the islands and events and battles mentioned in the book.

Important story

Read Noe's book and found it quite memorable from many of the incidents included. I recall many of them from news reports and movies from those times. Leanne's experience going thru that era must have been harrowing. It was a very good read.

Elise Darcy grew up in North London in the 1970's, the daughter of two baby boomer school teachers. Her love of books began at an early age when trips to Regent's Park always culminated in a visit to Foyles, the legendary independent bookstore in Charing Cross Road. She has fond memories of exploring a veritable Aladdin’s cave of books; a magical place with winding staircases, old creaking lifts, and cosy corners in which to settle down and lose herself in a good book. It Takes 2 To Tango

Book 2 in the continuing story of John & Sylvia is just as riveting as Book 1 Living Apart Together. Again great length as well as great plot.

It is hard to keep a marriage together especially when one partner is the marriage is submissive & one over bearing. And this author hits the nail on the head you do grow apart if you have nothing any longer in common once your children are grown.

I'm a strong woman & I would NOT let my child dictate my marriage to me nor would I have interfered with my parents marriage. In this sequel the children are way to involved in their parents lives.

Again I started reading this book where I left off in the middle around Midnight it's 3:40AM & I just finished it now I have to wait for book 3 entitled John. I not sure I can wait that long.

If you like reading books that are somewhat based on reality you will enjoy this book as much as I did.

So now I have to buy Dear John?

700 pages later, still nothing was ironed out. While I enjoyed the book, there was so much repetition: John is a vanilla tight-ass and Sylvie is a wimpy slob. I kept reading, enjoying, reading, enjoying, wondering how Cornwall would be resolved, but it wasn't even brought up again. I loved Sylie's evolution; how she was progressing into the woman she always wanted to be, but I really didn't like the continued whining of either main character. I looked forward to how the marriage would work out, but I never found out. The book, now series, just ends. Now buy the third installment. I feel that if I purchase the next book, nothing will still be resolved and have to read the continued carping. I wouldn't mind buying the next book if the prior books had showed proper endings, with new escapades to enjoy. Now, I just feel like I was gypped.

This book is one part of a series. It is about two brothers (Joe and Frank Hardy) who solve mysteries. In this book they are on a movie set in the mountains as extras. They also help the animal handlers (Lloyd and Gene) who are responsible for taking care of Omar the mountain lion, who is in the movie.
The movie is about Jumper Hermit, a local criminal, who was thought to be killed in an airplane accident. During the filming, someone tries to stop the movie from being made. The stunts that are planned are sabotaged.(...)
My favorite part of the book was all the mysterious happenings such as the sightings of Big Foot and ghosts. It was my favorite because it makes you keep guessing about what is going on and what is happening. The way it was written makes me think that those kinds of things were real.
I highly recommend this book to people who like to figure out things by themselves. Anyone who likes mysteries would like this book, also. I enjoyed the book because of all the mysteries in it.

I was a bit dIsappointed with this one. I have read all the Stephanie Plum series and loved them all. My favorite character is Grandma Mazur, she is not a huge part of this story and I was more than dIsappointed, the wasn't a lot of Stephanie's bumbling and accidental captures as in the other books. This book fell short of what had been delivered in the previous books.

Plum Repeats Her Storyline Once Again

Save your money and reread one of the earlier Plum books - this is just a redo of the last 10 + books in the series. Sorry but only the scenery changes, same plot line, same men story line etc. The idea is she is a college grad with no usable skills, does the bounty job half way & hops back & forth between 2 men. She doesn't get ahead, she doesn't change, she is definitely NOT a good example to younger girls. Sorry, this has been my last Evanovich book.

This will likely be my last purchase in the series. Whole chunks of text are direct from earlier books. The writing quality has continually depreciated over the last several books in the series, and I suspect they are largely being written by someone else. Not worth the time or the money. Re-read an older Plum instead, you will enjoy it more.

This book is intended primarily for serious students of geography but it will also appeal to the general reader. For this reason technical terms have been used as sparingly as is consistent with correct meaning. No apology is needed for including a considerable historical geographical section. The subjects treated under this heading are a few choice plums selected from a basketful of excellent fruit. No attempt has been made at a connected historical surveyor treatment.

This compact work, exceptionally well illustrated with over 100 plates, maps, and diagrams, includes a comprehensive bibliography, glossary and conversion tables. It will be a basic reference book and teaching aid for geographers, historians, economists and all those concerned with understanding China's developments in the last century.

Note that this "2007" geography is in fact an unrevised reprint of a 1965 book. Shame on Amazon for not giving the original publication date! Author was born in 1897....
