About the Author

James H. Kleiger, PsyD, ABPP, ABAP, is a diplomate in clinical and assessment psychology and Fellow in the Society for Personality Assessment. Dr. Kleiger is a practicing psychologist and psychoanalyst in Bethesda, MD. He is past President of the Baltimore Washington Society for Psychoanalysis and previously the Director of the Postdoctoral Psychology Training Program at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS. He is the author of Disordered Thinking and the Rorschach (The Analytic Press, 1999), along with numerous papers, book chapters, and presentations on assessing thought disorder and psychosis, psychotherapy, and psychoanalytic perspectives of psychological assessment.

Ali Khadivi, PhD, is Associate Chairman for Clinical Care, Evaluation and Research, Department of Psychiatry, Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, and an associate professor of clinical psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. A Fellow in the Society for Personality Assessment, Dr. Khadivi is an assessment psychologist, teacher, consultant, supervisor, and lecturer who has written and presented extensively on the topic of assessment of psychosis and severe mental illness. He maintains a clinical and forensic psychology practice in New York City.

An excellent resource for clinicians in any setting

One would think that—after more than a century of clinical inquiry and research—we would know psychosis when we see it. It turns out that it’s not that simple. Drs. Kleiger and Khadivi take a comprehensive look at this multifaceted clinical challenge, bring together the state of the art in contemporary research and ideas, and demystify psychotic processes and experiences in clear and straightforward language.

The book is full of practical guidance, but is not just a handbook: it helps clinicians conceptualize complex psychotic symptoms more clearly and better understand their human impact. While Kleiger and Khadivi cover the DSM 5 diagnostic framework in considerable detail, they also go beyond the technical aspects of diagnosis to explain the evolution of thinking about psychosis within psychiatry at large. In addition, they directly tackle the numerous challenges psychotic symptoms present in actual clinical practice, such as identifying high-risk patients, assessing symptoms in culturally diverse populations, gauging suicide and violence potential, and understanding psychotic presentations in children and adolescents.

I rarely see full-blown psychosis in my current practice, but nevertheless found this book to be an invaluable resource. All clinicians are wise to be mindful of the full range of human functioning, and to be cognizant of the subthreshold psychotic symptoms and their correlates that can arise in the personality, substance use, and mood and anxiety disorders we frequently encounter. “Assessing Psychosis” offers long-overdue reassessment of this critical topic, and provides insights that can help any clinician understand his or her own patients with greater clarity and sensitivity.

As a Psychiatric APRN, I was delighted to find this outstanding reference and very applicable book on the complex topic of psychosis. It is not a dry textbook type manual, on the contrary, the vignettes presented in the beginning of the book will capture the attention of clinicians that have been perplexed by these patients and responsible to make a clear diagnosis and treatment plan. This has been extremely helpful in my clinical practice that I refer to frequently. The book is very well written and clearly supported by research. I feel fortunate to have discovered this excellent resource.

This gem of a book lives up to its self description as "A Clinician's Guide". The authors take the reader through primary definitions, historical concepts, clinical manifestations, and diagnostic assessments of psychosis, including the most recent DSM-5 criteria. For the seasoned clinician, this little book provides a comprehensive update on the current thinking of psychotic illnesses. For the student or early career practitioner, it will serve as an invaluable primer on how to assess and think about psychosis when approaching every patient. I highly recommend it.

Mandatory for serious cooks, but not an easy read

First, my comments are based on the 1961 edition, the first year that an English language version was made available in the US.

This is a book every serious cook should add to their reference library at some point. But, it is a reference work, and not something that you will use on a daily basis. The book is a strange amalgam - part dictionary, part recipe book, part history, and part technique. I "read" it by picking a topic that interests me, and following all of the myriad threads that flow from that topic. I also use it to look up terms or techniques that are new to me. And if you want eclectic, it is here. Not sure to do with that unfortunate woodpecker who made a kamikaze run on your sliding glass door? Larousse suggests that you prepare it as you would a blackbird, or thrush (why didn't I think of that?).

Probably not the first book a new cook should acquire, but as you begin to ramp up your game, it should find a place in your library.

This. Book. Is. Amazing! Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy from the sixties- they are much more useful thank the new ones. It's not for beginners though; this book assumes you know how to cook.

Excesses of revolutions

With the collapse of the Ottoman empire after World War I and the restructure of Turkey with Ataturk as leader, the push to create a modern European-looking nation suffered the excesses of many revolutions and this include the attack on traditional "Oriental" music. Folk music was permitted primarily as a source of melodies for Western polytonal composition with mainly European orchestral instruments, in the manner of Bartok and Khachaturian. Sufi lodges were disbanded and with them their rites and music. This book discusses the history of musical forms in Turkey before, during, and now after the politically directed injunctions in a scholarly but readable anthology of papers presented at a conference in Istanbul in 1997. Included is a paper on the role of Jews and Jewish religious music in Ottoman art music. Another article of note is on Albania as another example of political interference on traditional musics. Key to the recent relaxation and influx of musical influences from neighboring Middle Eastern lands was mass communication: recordings, tapes, and the internet and the role of musicians themselves in wishing to expand and explore their idioms. This book provides a fine introduction to the complex of music, Islam, and society in one of the crossroads of the world.

Still using Writer's Inc. after 9 years!

This book served me well through high school, college, my first job as a newspaper reporter, and also as a content writer for an Internet integrator. Highly recommended. I believe all schools should do what my high school did with this book: but a copy for every student to keep forever. It is an invaluable resource, with the right approach, and a little attitude.
Fun, witty, smart, direct, and simply the best reference book I've ever owned, Writer's Inc. is exceptional not only for its utility, but also its content. Writer's Inc. is not only a grammar guide and reference, but addresses the THINKING and LEARNING processes in a way that most schools fail to do directly.
Read this book. Keep it on your shelf all through school, college, a career, and the rest of your life after this and you will have a richer mind for it.

As a writer and a 15-year homeschool veteran, I have used many different programs for composition. At last I have found *The One.* Writer's Inc Teaching Guide, used in conjunction with the Student Guide, is everything I have looked for in a writing program. It is rigorous, yet flexible. It works well for students with varied ability levels, as well as those with different learning styles. I wish I had found this program 15 years ago. Highest marks to Writer's Inc!

This is money well spent. This book covers all part of speech and keeps your writing on track. I chose this book as I was a nurse for 28 years and never wrote in full sentences. This is helping me get back to good sentence structure and complete sentences. I highly recommend the book and seller
