About the Author
Leif Melin, PhD, is Professor of Strategy and Organisation and the Hamrin Professor of Family Business Strategy at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS). He is the founding and past Director of  Center for Family Enterprise and Ownership (CeFEO). He has served as Dean and Managing Director for JIBS. He was a founding researcher of the STEP project ( Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices) and has served as member for the Global STEP Project Board. In 2012, he was honored with the International award at the 26th anniversary conference of the Family Firm Institute, and he was also selected as a Family Owned Business Institute Scholar. He is the founder and annual co-chair of the EIASM Family Firm Research Workshop. He has published in international journals and book volumes, including Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, Strategic Organization, Long Range Planning and Family Business Review.  He serves on the editorial board of several international journals.

Mattias Nordqvist, PhD, is Professor of Business Administration and the Hamrin International Professor of Family Business. He is the Director of Center for Family Enterprise and Ownership (CeFEO) and on the faculty of Department of Entrepreneurship, Strategy, Organization and Leadership (ESOL) at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) in Sweden where he has also served as an Associate Dean. Mattias is a former Co-Director of the Global STEP Project and Visiting Scholar at Babson College, USA, University of Alberta, Canada and Bocconi University, Italy. He was selected as a Family Owned Business Institute Scholar twice; 2007-2008 and 2011-2012 by the Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids in the USA, and won the Family Firm Institute (FFI) Award for Best Unpublished Research Paper twice; 2005 and 2011. Mattias is a recipient of the Young Entrepreneurship Researcher Award 2006 from the Swedish Entrepreneurship Forum and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. He is a co-founding Associate Editor of Journal of Family Business Strategy.

Pramodita Sharma, Ph.D., is the Sanders Professor for Family Business at the School of Business Administration, University of Vermont. Prior to this appointment, she was the CIBC Distinguished Professor of Family Business at the John Molson School of Business, Concordia University in Montreal. She is a visiting scholar at Babson College where she serves as the Academic Director of the Global Successful Transgenerational Entrepreneurship Practices (STEP) project. In 2011, she was honored with the prestigious Barbara Hollander award at the 25th anniversary conference of the Family Firm Institute. In addition to two co-authored books, she has published about fifty scholarly articles and book chapters on family business studies. She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Family Business Review (FBR), is the co-founder of the Family Enterprise Research Conference, and the founding Chair the Annual Global Family Enterprise Case Competition.

Quite interesting

This book is really two books in one - The Space Merchants and The Merchants' War. The Merchants' War was written by Frederik Pohl and Cyril M. Kornbluth in 1952, and tells the story of a dystopian future, where ad-companies rule, and consumers are the cattle they drive. The Merchants' War is a sequel, written in 1984, some twenty-odd years after the death of Mr. Kornbluth, and it tells the story of the inevitable folly that this out of control world must produce.

Overall, I found these two stories to be quite interesting. Admittedly, the anti-capitalistic angle is played very heavily, but these books are designed as political statements, and not as pure science fiction. And, I must say that I found the story lines to be quite interesting, and the action gripping. So, if you like a good read, then I would highly recommend this book.

This Manual of Practice focuses on training structures used in open-river channels with flow in one direction (non-tidal), and many of the structures are also appropriate for use on low-head (no reservoir storage capacity) lock-and-dam river systems. It describes in detail the proper use of dikes and revetments and explains how to design channel dimensions and alignment so that little or no maintenance dredging is required.

Topics include: sediment management in river channels, evolution of training works in the United States, training structure types and layout, dikes, revetments, other types of training works, case studies, costs, environmental design, model studies, performance evaluation and inspection, and repair techniques.

Includes a glossary and a reprint of a 1991 paper on an analytical method to determine dike length.
