decompose a program into a directed graph

As computer hardware continues to improve, along the lines of Moore's Law, software improvements have lagged. This has been particularly so with a system of parallel machines. The biggest problem is how to translate a given algorithm's implementation, that was written for a single CPU, into one for several CPUs. More to the point, how to do this systematically, instead of in a manual, ad hoc fashion?

That is the promise of Sinnen's book. It takes a program, and finds a task graph. That is, the code is decomposed into a set of smaller modules. Each module can be taken to be a node of a directed graph. The directed nature of the graph is essential to the discussion. The direction of a vertex indicates a dependency on another node. Given this graph, and a set of CPUs, the book explains how to allocate the nodes across the CPUs, in a manner that is optimal.

Important related concepts are developed. Like clustering heuristics. These are used to form groups or clusters of modules. To a programmer, think of the concept of recursion. That's the utility of clustering.

The text is heavily mathematical, as befits any application of graph theory. The crucial part of the text is at its start, as you might surmise. It explains how to algorithmically extract the dependence graph, which is a representation of the dependence structure of the initial program.

About the Author
John le Carré was born in 1931 and attended the universities of Bern and Oxford. He taught at Eton and served briefly in British Intelligence during the Cold War. For the last fifty years he has lived by his pen. He divides his time between London and Cornwall.

will appreciate this amazing collection of vignettes

I'm not sure anyone under fifty, even LeCarre fans, will appreciate this amazing collection of vignettes. Two things stand out: first, this man has been a true witness to the makings of modern history and second, his life has been an adventure to match any he describes herein.
While much of his success (in life in general) has been the result of putting a powerful intellect to work in a way that we all benefit, it is also due to his curiosity and willingness to go see for himself, no matter where his current quest may take him. He constantly refers to himself as a novelist and that he is, but he is also a first rate journalist whose historical reportage is nonpareil.
Personally, I found this book answered many of the questions that I would have while reading his novels. Whether inadvertently (doubtful) or intentionally, this book provides many aha! keys to his collected works.
If you like LeCarre, this quick read will make your day!

Disappointing

As a long time fan of Mr. Le Carre, I finished the book felling that, of his personal life, he remains a spy. The only story he tells that intrigued me was about his father, something I'd read a while ago, perhaps in the New Yorker or heard in interviews. I would have loved to have read more about the Nazis in German government after the war, but all I got was a short vignette. Many of the characters he includes in the book are just not interesting. The really interesting ones, he glosses over. My love of his books remains, but of this book of memories, I found it disappointing. Perhaps in a future book, he'll tell us more. That would be the book his readers are still waiting for.

Not quite an autobiography

This is a very interesting book by a novelist who can remember what he wrote and what were the influences that motivated him. I have enjoyed reading and rereading LeCarre's books for half a century. George Smiley is perhaps the most important literary figure of the Cold War. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold was and probably still is the book that exposes the false sense of foreboding that characterizes that era. It was required reading for my daughter's Twentieth Century European literature course at Upenn. This book uncovers some of the events that led to LeCarre creating the best spy fiction ever written. As such, it provides a window into what he was trying to say both in his fiction and in the movies that were based on his books. I recommend it highly.

This is a great book that does exactly as it promises. It gives an over-view of the hero cults and ancestor worship up until the Iron Age (sometimes going a bit further to prove her point). It's thorough, explaining all of the research done in each grave site. It's obviously a very scholarly, very dry book. Its not for beginners, although manageable if you have google open and are willing to search every other word...and I speak from experience. The only issue I had with this book is that the index is off by a few pages, making it completely useless.

Note to people who own the book: If the index is being difficult, google books has the preview. Just go to the book preview, search the key term you're looking for, and even if the page isn't available for preview it will tell you which page the term is actually on.

Don' buy: you will just get a photocopy, not the real book

Don't buy this book: it's NOT the 1995 paperback edition as advertised on Amazon, but a cheap print-on-demand copy of that edition (my copy was actually printed in Lexington, KY, the same day I submitted my order through Amazon): the book - and particularly the misprinted cover - looks like a cheap photocopy and is by far not worth the $46 they will charge you for it.

Tissot himself was born in Grancy, Switzerland in 1728, but practiced for most of his life in the Swiss city of Lausanne. He was one of the most notable physicians of his day. He was appointed Vatican medical advisor and once even received a letter of praise from Napoleon Bonaparte, who commended him in a letter dated 1 April 1787, for his, “days in treating humanity,” and even conceded that Tissot’s fame and reputation “has reached even into the mountains of Corsica.” Bonaparte then concluded, that he has a great deal of “respect for [Tissot’s] works.” And Bonaparte was not mistaken in his admiration of Tissot; even modern doctors still regard him as a basis for “future generations of doctors.” (Journal of Neurology, Volume 233, Number 2.)

Tissot is most noted in the medical community for a chapter that he wrote on the migraine in his more comprehensive Traité des nerfs et de leurs maladies (Treatise on the Nerves and Nervous Disorders) and modern doctors now regard him as “the classical authority on the migraine.” But Tissot’s best-seller, and one of the best-selling medical books in the entire 18th century, was a small book that he published in 1761 entitled, Avis au peuple sur sa santé (Advice to People on their Health). As the title suggests, Tissot’s best-seller was a handbook for people who wanted to maintain good health and establish habits that were essential to living long and healthy lives.

One year before Tissot had published his famous Avis au peuple sa santé, he published the following work: L’Onanism: Dissertation sur les maladies produites par la masturbation (Onanism: A Dissertation on the Diseases Caused by Masturbation).

He continued to practice in Lausanne until his death in 1797 at the age of 69.

I do not recommend this book to anyone hoping to gain disability benefits

This book fails to deliver what it promises. I've masturbated religiously, sometimes up to 10 times a day, for the past month since my first read through and if anything, my eyesight has improved! There's an extra bounce in my step, a genuine smile on my face, and my handshake has more exuberance and firmness to it than ever before, not "effeminate, idle, and weak" as it should be.

I do not recommend this book to anyone hoping to gain disability benefits.

I was wondering why my crotch was red and had a rash. Then I read this book. Now it makes sense! The rash is caused by masturbating too much. Also, I'm glad amazon suggested that I buy lotion during checkout. Thanks amazon! No more rashes.

This makes Jesus sad, and that is why we suffer

Until reading this book, filled with all of the most modern medical findings, I didn't truly understand what I had been doing to my body, and not just my body, but my soul. My withered, decaying husk was in shambles. I would masturbate for up to six hours a day, rubbing everything I could find across my pulsating member, spewing my seed on every surface of the house. This makes Jesus sad, and that is why we suffer. I will spend the rest of my life resisting the urge to purge the splurge, and it's all because of this fantastic book. Thank you, Dr. Samuel. You are a god send. I was tempted to masturbate to your picture, but thankfully your teachings have given me the strength to resist.

About the Author
Jack Levin, Ph.D. is the Brudnick Professor of Sociology and Criminology at Northeastern University in Boston, where he co-directs its Center on Violence and Conflict.  He has authored or co-authored 30 books, including the recently published volumes Serial Killers and Sadistic Murderers—Up Close and Personal and The Violence of Hate.   Dr. Levin was honored by the MassachusettsCouncil for Advancement and Support of Education as its “Professor of the Year.” He has spoken to a wide variety of community, academic, and professional groups, including the White House Conference on Hate Crimes, the Department of Justice, the Department of Education, OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (a membership of 59 countries) and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

One of the best statistics books I can think of for social scientists who are not well aquainted with statistical procedures. The book is structured in several chapters, each concentrating on one statistical problem. In the first part of each chapter the theoretical background is given, followed by examples. Then, other examples are given, so that it becomes easily understandable how to correctly use the formulas respectively when they can't be used. Finally, there is a part of exercises where the reader may apply his new knowledge, before proceeding to the next chapter. However, it is just an introduction, not dealing with more complex statistical problems. Very recommendable for anyone who needs a solid basic knowledge in statistic or who wants how to start processing existing data.
