A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more--including Krakauer's--in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer's epic account of the May 1996 disaster.

By writing Into Thin Air, Krakauer may have hoped to exorcise some of his own demons and lay to rest some of the painful questions that still surround the event. He takes great pains to provide a balanced picture of the people and events he witnessed and gives due credit to the tireless and dedicated Sherpas. He also avoids blasting easy targets such as Sandy Pittman, the wealthy socialite who brought an espresso maker along on the expedition. Krakauer's highly personal inquiry into the catastrophe provides a great deal of insight into what went wrong. But for Krakauer himself, further interviews and investigations only lead him to the conclusion that his perceived failures were directly responsible for a fellow climber's death. Clearly, Krakauer remains haunted by the disaster, and although he relates a number of incidents in which he acted selflessly and even heroically, he seems unable to view those instances objectively. In the end, despite his evenhanded and even generous assessment of others' actions, he reserves a full measure of vitriol for himself.

This updated trade paperback edition of Into Thin Air includes an extensive new postscript that sheds fascinating light on the acrimonious debate that flared between Krakauer and Everest guide Anatoli Boukreev in the wake of the tragedy.  "I have no doubt that Boukreev's intentions were good on summit day," writes Krakauer in the postscript, dated August 1999. "What disturbs me, though, was Boukreev's refusal to acknowledge the possibility that he made even a single poor decision. Never did he indicate that perhaps it wasn't the best choice to climb without gas or go down ahead of his clients." As usual, Krakauer supports his points with dogged research and a good dose of humility. But rather than continue the heated discourse that has raged since Into Thin Air's denouncement of guide Boukreev, Krakauer's tone is conciliatory; he points most of his criticism at G. Weston De Walt, who coauthored The Climb, Boukreev's version of events. And in a touching conclusion, Krakauer recounts his last conversation with the late Boukreev, in which the two weathered climbers agreed to disagree about certain points. Krakauer had great hopes to patch things up with Boukreev, but the Russian later died in an avalanche on another Himalayan peak, Annapurna I.

"Intrinsically irrational" is how Jon Krakauer characterizes the compulsion to climb Mount Everest in his audiobook Into Thin Air. The highly publicized fates of the May 1996 Everest expeditions, including the tragic loss of 12 lives, seem to bear out Krakauer's statement. Listening to Krakauer read his own account of the events in this unabridged version adds a uniquely intimate and thought-provoking dimension to the tragedy. Although Krakauer reads his account with journalistic professionalism, it's impossible to forget that you are listening to someone unburdening himself of a great weight, an unburdening that sometimes nearly approaches a confession.

Since the 1980s, more and more "marginally qualified dreamers" have attempted the ascent of Everest, as guided commercial expeditions have dangled the possibility of reaching the roof of the world in front of anyone wealthy enough to pay for the privilege. In 1996, Outside magazine asked Krakauer, a frequent contributor, to write a piece on the commercialization of Everest, and Krakauer signed on as a member of New Zealander Rob Hall's expedition. The disastrous outcome of the 1996 expedition forced Krakauer to write a very different article.

Those who read Krakauer's book may wonder whether the audiobook can possibly shed more light on the unfortunate events. It does. Krakauer's chronicle is chilling and horrifying. He recounts with excruciating detail the physical and mental cost of such a climb. Even under the best of circumstances, each step up the ice-clad mountain is monumentally exhausting, and the oxygen-deprived brain loses the ability to make reliable judgements. And on May 10, 1996, when Hall's expedition and several others made their summit assault, the conditions were far from ideal. The mountain was so "crowded" that climbers had to wait their turn near the summit while their bottled oxygen dwindled by the minute. By afternoon a blinding hurricane-force storm had stranded a number of climbers on the highest, most exposed reaches of the mountain.

By writing and reading Into Thin Air, Krakauer may have hoped to exorcise some of his own demons and lay to rest some of the painful questions that still surround the event. He takes great pains to provide a balanced picture of the people and events he witnessed and gives due credit to the tireless and dedicated Sherpas. He also avoids blasting easy targets such as Sandy Pittman, the wealthy socialite who brought an espresso maker along on the expedition. Krakauer's highly personal inquiry into the catastrophe provides a great deal of insight into what went wrong. But for Krakauer himself, further interviews and investigations only lead him to the conclusion that his perceived failures were directly responsible for a fellow climber's death. Clearly, Krakauer remains haunted by the disaster, and although he relates a number of incidents in which he acted selflessly and even heroically, he seems unable to view those instances objectively. In the end, despite his evenhanded and even generous assessment of others' actions, he reserves a full measure of vitriol for himself. (Running time: 467 minutes; six tapes)

Very Excellent Book For Anyone With An Interest In Mount Everest

This is a superb, well-crafted, true story about the 1996 disaster on the Nepal side of Mount Everest. This book will be of interest both to people into mountaineering, and people who know nothing about mountaineering. I am dismayed by the 1 star reviews of this very excellent book, the criticisms just do not ring true. Krakauer writes a very fair and non-biased appraisal of the event. He goes into detail about all the personalities, on both Hall's & Fischer's teams, but also other teams on the mountain that he interacted with. He gives a step-by step dramatic retelling of all the events leading up to, and following the Everest storm that claimed several lives. The book is not written so technical as to be confusing to someone with no mountaineering experience, but it contains enough detail to make it relevant to those with mountain climbing experience. Rather than placing blame, he looks at areas where better decisions could have been made (including himself, even though he was a paying client and had no direct responsibility to anyone on his team)--this discussion is (and already has been) of value in future mountain-climbing endeavors. For example, Boukreev used supplemental oxygen on his guiding expeditions after the Everest disaster. Later editions of the book contain a post-script in which he answers criticisms by Boukreev. This story is historical, its well known how it will end, but Krakauer's version brings this story to life in a way that newspaper articles can not. His book is a beautiful memorial to the people on his team who lost their lives, and to Scott Fischer. The only thing lacking from this book, is there was no discussion on how the storm affected and caused tragedy on the teams ascending from the China side of the mountain, but its understandable that Krakauer chose not to include that portion, as he had no personal knowledge of that side.

I loved this book

I loved this book. Every page I turned made me feel like breathing. It was a wonderful book. I also met Jon in Richardson Tx. when he gave a lecture about the climb. He is a wonderful amazing person who was my pleasure to meet. If you want to read a real page turner and if you want to get an ideal for what it was like to climb Everest on that fateful climb I I highly recommend this book to everyone. I was working at a Beauty Salon in Dallas at the time that Jon came to Richardson Tx, to give his account of fateful events on this climb. I passed the book on to everyone in the Salon and they equally loved it.
My husband and I actually were following the climb when we came home from work every day and listened to live feed coming from the climb on our computers. We heard Rob and his Wife talking to one another which was truly heart breaking. I never imagined that Rob wouldn't make the climb back. I blame Doug for Rob's death. I would have left Doug behind and sent someone else back for him. Doug should have never been on this Mountain and Rob should have left him long before the Storm moved in.
The story that Jon tells here will amaze you and you won't be able to turn the pages fast enough. I loved the book and meeting Jon in person was a once in a life time experience.

Impressive and factual. Fascinating read.

I really enjoyed reading this account of events in 1996. I feel Mr Krakauer was able to put ego aside and with extensive research and interviews to back up his personal experience, present a morbidly fascinating insight. I also felt a great deal of compassion in his account towards fellow climbers and even critics in the main body and afterwords.
It must take great discipline to write about such a deeply personal event with such diligence towards fact and wherever speculation was presented the reader was always made aware, and repeated attempts to offer technical/clinical explanations for behaviours that seem out of character or normal behaviour.
I remember hearing about this tragedy when it happened but was only inspired to learn more after seeing the highly holywoodized movie Everest. This book truly reminded me how important separating fact from fiction/entertainment really is and highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn more from a highly endearing account from a humble human and gifted writer who happened to be there.
Thank you to the author for giving us a chance to hear your story and the events as you presented.

This work consists of more than 2000 abbreviated entries culled from the ten-volume Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (LJ 9/15/98). It has the same number of entries as the ten-volume set, whose lengthy essays each begin with a brief description of the subject; it is these descriptions that make up the content of the Concise Encyclopedia. The layout generally follows other one-volume Routledge works, e.g., the Biographical Dictionary of Twentieth-Century Philosophers (LJ 9/1/96). Each entry is signed and includes one or two suggestions for further reading on the topic. An alphabetical list of entries and their contributors appears at the beginning of the book, and there is a comprehensive subject index. Reflecting the entire set, the choice of entries has been carefully made, and topics are not limited either to history or to Western philosophy. Libraries owning the set probably don't need this, though it would not be costly to add for ready-reference purposes. Based on the widely acclaimed 10-volume Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy (1998), this abridgement includes entries on each of the more than 2,000 topics covered in the parent set. The vast majority of entries in the larger set begin with a short introduction to the topic designed to be accessible to the educated layperson, followed by a more in-depth treatment and often extensive lists of cross-references and annotated sources for further reading. Concise Routledge retains unaltered each of the short introductions and, in the case of entries for the branches of philosophy (e.g., Ethics , Metaphysic s, Political philos ophy) and selected religious philosophies (e.g., Islamic philosophy , Jewish philosophy), includes the entire several-page article. But a few examples will indicate how much detail has been lost from the parent edition: overviews of Chinese, Indian, Japanese, and Korean Buddhism have shrunk from thirty-seven to three pages; John Stuart Mill's entry has shrunk from fifteen to just under two pages; and Political philosophy, history of has shrunk from fourteen to one and one-half pages. In most cases, the number of cross-references and further reading citations (still helpfully annotated) has been significantly reduced. Still, these shorter treatments reflect the concentrated and carefully worded opinions of more than 1,200 philosophers and other scholars. The volume compares favorably to two works of similar length and scope: The Oxford Companion to Philosophy (1995) and The Cambridge Dic tionary of Philosophy (1999). Using entries on Aristotle, Descartes, and Wittgenstein as a basis for comparison, biographical entries in Con cise Routledge are much shorter than those in the Oxford and Cambridge titles. There are no sources for further reading in Cambridge , while those in Oxford are not annotated. Oxford has useful charts and tables not found in the other two. The index of Cambridge is limited to selected personal names not occurring as headwords. Concise Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy is recommended even for high-school, public, and academic libraries already owning the Oxford and Cambridge titles; its annotated reading lists alone are worth the price. It is especially recommended for smaller libraries unable to afford the 10-volume parent set. REVWR

Comprehensive but can be ignorant

I spent a few days browsing thru, to get a rough idea of what areas of philosophy I might do well to study more. For that purpose, this book seemed good.

I was alarmed, however, to find in the entry for "Skinner, Burrhus Frederick" this statement: "Both it [i.e. scientific behaviorism] and radical behaviorism have been obviated by the development of a computational theory of the mind." That's false. Radical behaviorism is the philosophy of behavior that informs the science of applied behavior analysis, of which there are thousands of practicing analysts and thousands of clients benefitting from those analysts. Computational theories of the mind are speculative, tend toward "mentalism" ( fictitous explanation) and, as yet, have yielded little if any practical benefit. Skinner expected that (physical) brain science would advance and welcomed that, but behaviorism is operating at a different level and is not invalidated by advances in brain science. Limitations in any theory of the mind, computational or otherwise, were precisely what led Skinner to a behaviorist approach. The emergence of computational theories of the mind presents nothing to lessen the problems Skinner recognizes were inherent in theories of the mind. On the contrary, study of Radical Behaviorism is all the more important so that the fictitous aspects of such theories be recognized. It was no accident that in the March 1994 issue of the American Psychological Society's magazine "Observer", president Roddy Roediger, a cognitive psychologist, in his article "What Happened to Behaviorism", suggested celebrating "the power of behavioristic analyses...even if you are one of the cognitive psychologists who believe behaviorism is irrelevant, passe and/or dead. It isn't".

Computational theories of the mind may seem intriguing, but they hardly obviate Radical Behaviorism. That such an ignorant statement was published makes me wonder about how many other similar false statements are in this book.

See if the following doesn't seem a more wise and professional way of handling the differences between the cognitive and behaviorist positions. It's from G.E. Zuriff's review of Lattal's and Chase's "Behavior Theory and Philosophy" and appeared in May 2005 issue The Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior:

"In principle, there are no decisive philosophical objections to a cognitive theory. Practically, however, there is ample disagreement over whether such a theory will, in fact, generate fruitful research progress. Cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience are betting that such a theory is feasible, whereas SIB [ Skinner Inspired Behaviorism ] seems committed to its unlikelihood."

An encyclopedia entry on the father of an active and fruitful philosophy and science is no place for ignorant or biased dismissal.

Excellent overall;however,the discussion of Keynes is wrong

Overall,this encyclopedia is an excellent source of important information on philosophy and philosophers in general.I have two minor quibbles,given my interest in the work of J M Keynes.There are errors in the assessment of Keynes's A Treatise on Probability(TP)which was published in 1921.On p.233,it is ascerted that only a qualitative estimate of probability is,in general,possible in Keynes's system.On p.234,it is claimed that"...what is,at best ,known qualitatively."Again, the "what"refers to estimating probabilities.These assessments are based on the misinterpretations of chapter 3 of the TP made by A. Carabelli,B.Bateman,J.Runde and D.Moggridge concerning the meaning of the words "nonnumerical"and "nonmeasurable"used by Keynes in chapter 3 of the TP.Contrary to the above authors,Keynes meant that a single numeral could not ,in general ,be used to estimate a probability.Instead,it took two numerals to estimate a probability.Keynes is the founder of the interval estimate approach to estimating probabilities,where a lower bound and an upper bound specify the probability.Nonnumerical is clearly defined in chapter 15 of the TP on page 160 by Keynes to mean "...between numerical limits."Of course, interval estimates are subject to problems of noncomparability,nonrankability and incommensurability.However,the intervals themselves are quantitative estimates of probability.Finally,it is simply incorrect to make the following claim about Frank Ramsey:"He produced the first quantitative theory of how we make decisions".(p.777 or p.737).Keynes's interval estimate approach was combined by him with his index,w, to measure the completeness of the evidence upon which probability estimates are based and with his conventional coefficient of weight(w)and risk,c.The goal of the decision maker is to maximize cA,where A is some outcome.Ramsey,who started the misinterpretation of chapter 3 of the TP with his very poor reviews of 1922 and 1926,was second.Keynes was the first to put together a complete quantitative system of decision making.

Quite Disappointing

Despite such a great reputation that Routledge has in the field of philosophy, this concise encyclopedia really did disappoint me. The 10 volume encyclopedia is great, no doubts about that but this concise version of it is nothing but an advertisement to the larger version.
Yes, this encyclopedia is comprehensive, it includes philosophers and philosophy from all over the world but too bad not in sufficient depth to make it meaningful enough. It is assumed that this book is for the layman but frankly speaking, all it can do is to introduce the names/terms/concepts to the layman without being able to shed more light.
If one would really want to know more, the Oxford Companion will do a better job. And if you want to know more about a particular philosopher or movement, the internet will be a better place although less authoritative.
Looks nice on the bookshelf though.

Another battle oriented shonen that I'm really enjoying. The three main characters have lots of personality and are fun together. We learn of Keres background and why he became a hunter. Meanwhile, Raiga finally meets up with Bexel from his past and things do not go the way he had expected at all. Otherwise tons of battle action. I don't play the game but I imagine those who do will really enjoy this series.

MONSTER HUNTER WORLD EXPANDED!!! and its great :D

Note: my opinion so yeah
this manga right here as far as i know is actually the manga of a light novel for monster hunter and i believe the light novel is not available in america yet. Here is what i get and why i think this deserves a 5 star rating no its not perfect but nothing is perfect. This manga deserves the rating i gave because unlike the monster Hunter Orage which was done by the creator of fairy tail, this manga tells you how this characters villagers and hunter live like and what struggles they because of living in a world filled with rathians and tigrexs but the monsters are not evil and only harmful when provoked, this a interesting thing that you didnt really see in Orage. the main cast is filled with the hothead raiga the cool headed keres and the smart scholar hunter torche. At first this three look like every other stereo type character but as the series goes on they start changing and understanding why each of them hunt and how they all develop their friendship and team work. Also the other hunters from the previous volume return and we get to see them more this time. This manga is mostly for the people who played the games and enjoys them and always wanted to know what would monster hunter be like with a story and also filled with action when its needed.
